FEATURE EVENT PREVIEW
THE HUB OF ENGINEERING INNOVATION
Advanced Engineering is back with its new Medical Device Engineering Zone
T
he UK’s largest annual gathering of engineering professionals, Advanced
Engineering, is returning for its eleventh year on October 30 and 31, 2019 at the NEC, Birmingham. With some 15,000 engineering professionals in attendance, and zones spanning the advanced engineering sector, the show will offer exhibitors and attendees seven zones to present new technologies and get to grips with some of the industry’s latest innovations. The British Isles is home to a wealth of
innovation, and Ireland plays a vital part in this progression. It may come as news to many that the global supply chain that governed the distribution of some of Apple’s latest smartphones made in places such as China and Malaysia was coordinated in Cork. This is just one example of the country’s
legacy of electronics manufacturing that dates back to a time when Apple, then just a start-up, arrived in the city in the early 1980s to produce Mac computers. But electronics isn’t Ireland’s only area
of innovation. In 2018, the Irish Medtech Association (IMA) called on the Irish government to invest to €42 million in advanced manufacturing

infrastructure, including the production of medical devices. One of the show’s latest additions is its
Medical Device Engineering Zone. Brand new for 2019, the zone will be dedicated to high performance medical device design and manufacturing. Supporting 3,000 medical device manufacturers from across the UK, the zone is a marker of one of the nation’s most disruptive areas of engineering. Supported by GTMA, Gambica, Medilink
and other UK trade bodies, Advanced Engineering’s new zone will showcase researchers, medical parts and components manufacturers, software specialists and more. Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the Medical Device Open Forum to discover how Medical Device Engineering is going to develop further in the future. In addition to the new zone, the trade
show will also be welcoming a revamped edition of its Enabling Innovations Zone, which will give ten start-ups and smaller businesses the chance to showcase their technologies in front of some of the industry’s biggest stakeholders. Boasting a total of seven co-locating zones, Advanced Engineering is truly a

hub of engineering innovation. With the likes of Aerospace Engineering, Composites Engineering, Performance Metals Engineering and Nuclear Engineering to name just a few of the show’s zones, businesses will be able to access a wealth of expertise to suit their business solutions. “In times of uncertainty, whether that’s
in the marketplace, innovation or the choice of technologies available to you, industry leaders suggest that those who strive to invest will overcome doubt and make profit” explains Jeremy Whittingham, head of marketing at Advanced Engineering. “That’s why we believe in supporting and demonstrating the UK and Ireland’s flourishing engineering markets here at Advanced Engineering”.
