NEW PARTNERSHIP TO REDUCE WORKPLACE ACCIDENTS

Make UK has selected Alcumus SafeContractor in a new partnership to reduce workplace accidents and increase sustainable growth, making British manufacturers safer, healthier and stronger. Manufacturers regularly utilise contractors for

their specialist expertise to get to market faster, more efficiently and more economically than their competitors. However, the use of contractors has inherent risks. The Health and Safety Executive suggest around 581,000 workers sustained non- fatal injuries in 2018/20191, many of these are down to unsafe work practices which can be avoided with the correct education and precautions. Further to this, increasing legislation means that manufacturers need to consider compliance beyond health and safety to include environmental factors, quality, finance, GDPR, and to ensure that their supply chain is free from modern slavery. Make UK has partnered with SafeContractor, the

UK’s leading health and safety accreditation provider, to help British manufacturers overcome

these challenges. The partnership will provide members with the appropriate health & safety and ethical vetting of their supply chain to minimise the risks to individuals and their business. “Health and Safety managers

are becoming increasingly stretched as their role increases in scope, urgency and importance. Likewise, procurement functions get frustrated as supply chains become ever more complex, making it harder to manage and demonstrate compliance. Finding and assessing the right people for the job can be costly and a huge admin burden.” “The SafeContractor online portal enables

organisations to manage and source the best contractors to minimise risks and transform their supply chain into a competitive advantage. This two-way commitment to ethical best

practice and sustainable business growth allows leading businesses and their suppliers to become safer, healthier and stronger,” commented Gemma Archibald, managing director of Alcumus SafeContractor. www.safecontractor.com www.makeuk.org

Spring issue of Industrial Compliance. Static electricity is often perceived

as an invisible risk when handling FIBCs but the consequences are very real. We find out how to mitigate the risks on page 8. Also in this issue, we provide a

handy guide with useful tips that will help you save money on your fourth utility - air. Compressed air leaks are a significant source of lost energy, often wasting as much as 20-30 per cent of your compressor’s output. Find out how to identify air leaks on page 28. .

Victoria White - Editor COMPANY ACHIEVES NEW INTERNATIONAL STANDARD

UK safety expert Arco has achieved ISO 45001, the new international health and safety standard, on its first attempt. Aligned to internationally recognised best practice, the new standard helps put in place the policies, procedures and controls needed to achieve the best possible working conditions and workplace health and safety. Established in 2018, the standard ISO 45001 replaces

the existing OHSAS 18001 and takes a more proactive approach to identifying and evaluating risks. Key potential benefits from implementing the standard include a reduction of workplace incidents, insurance premiums and absenteeism, as well as an improvement in general health and safety performance. Arco has been working on its migration from the

previous standard to ISO 45001 for the last six months. The final assessment was undertaken over four intense days at its Head Office and National Distribution Centre

where the standard assessor visited departments, reviewed procedures and documentation as well as interviewed Arco employees. Jo Heselton, Arco’s Group Safety health and

environmental manager, said: “I’m delighted Arco has been awarded the standard and to achieve it on our first attempt is a testament to all of the hard work that has been put into preparation by my colleagues.” When visiting Arco, the assessor was particularly

impressed by the engagement and self-awareness of Arco staff. He praised the company’s Safety Pledges, a newly-launched initiative that uses popular song lyrics to support safety behaviour in the Arco workplace such as, ‘Walk this way’ to emphasise designated walkways and ‘if you liked it, you should have put a lid on it’ to minimise the risk of spills that could lead to slips and trips. www.arco.co.uk

When trusted business group, Value Products, launched SafetySigns4Less in December 2014, the organisation’s main objective was to offer quality and compliant safety signage at incredibly low prices, to complement the existing group offerings of health and safety, and facilities management supplies. Starting with a sign shop of four staff, the team at SafetySigns4Less

researched the most popular sign variants and best quality materials to ensure that they had a solid portfolio of first-rate signage to go to market with. Over the last five years, the business has grown exponentially and now a fully equipped sign shop of 15 staff offers over 15,000 standard and customisable products including banners, labels, posters and safety equipment, on top of the established range of safety signs. Believing that employees are key to the success of its business,

SafetySigns4Less heavily invests in providing its sign shop staff with industry standard training in printing processes and delivers the latest technology that allows the sign shop to meet increased demand whilst still producing the highest quality products.
