Everyone at Datateam Business Media is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. We offer our heartfelt condolences to The Royal Family at this difficult time.
Welcome to the Autumn issue of UK Manufacturing. In the manufacturing sector, energy is a complex challenge at the best of times but now, it is a real headache. The continuing rise in energy prices means significant increases to overheads. Furthermore, our energy supply is looking less secure, and that brings with it the risk of disrupted productivity from blackouts, brownouts or power cuts. Manufacturers also have legally binding targets for achieving net zero and legislative pressure is often compounded by sustainability demands from supply chain partners and customers. So, what can you do? On page 20 Powerstar’s Alastair Morris looks at the current landscape and three of the core technologies that are helping UK manufacturers meet the challenges of the ‘Energy Trilemma’.

WERNERCO INCREASES MANUFACTURING IN MALDON
production of its extension ladders. With a forecast of the manufacture of thousands of extra units annually, this will see the increase of personnel at the site with additional jobs created, which is not only great news for the local area, but exciting and advantageous news for UK manufacturing. Jan Zmrzlik, general manager operations at WernerCo, said: “We are delighted to be able to announce that we have extended manufacturing at our Maldon site. There is such a great wealth of expertise in the country and we are excited to be harnessing that. “This is just the first phase of new

TEEPEE HARNESSES NEW OPPORTUNITIES WITH £200,000 INVESTMENT IN SECOND FACTORY
manufacturing site in the Black Country after a surge in orders from new and existing customers. Teepee Electrical, which has secured over £500,000 of additional contracts since the turn of the year, has invested more than £200,000 in taking on and fitting out the additional 7,500 sq ft unit in Aldridge. Located just six miles from its existing unit in
O
Bloxwich, the new facility will house machinery recently purchased from a company that went into receivership and the installation of automated cable, strip and cutting machines, ink jet printing and technical crimp presses. Fresh investment has also been channelled into installing a 30m cable cut and assembly bench with matching A-frames, ideal for complex wiring and vehicle harness sets. Steve Clarke, managing director, commented:
“We work across automotive, blue light and rail and we’ve seen an increase in orders across all three sectors – necessitating the need for more space and more staff. “Our existing facility in Bloxwich had scope
for increased capacity, but in order to optimise efficiency, reduce product changeovers and to cope with the variances the new market opportunities are offering us, investing in the second site in Aldridge was key.” He went on to add: “After a comprehensive
search, we came across a unit that was undergoing refurbishment. The layout was perfect and gave us plenty of space to create dedicated cells for specific projects and we’ve now also got the bonus of being able to tap into a new labour pool for employees.
UKManufacturing Autumn 2022 “Our ERP management system will link both
factories together and our world class quality standards will ensure all wiring harnesses are delivered on time and to the highest specification. “We’ve even bought a new electric car to
help transport people between the two factories and, importantly, support our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.” Teepee Electrical is looking to take turnover to £5m in 2022, as more customers tap into its ability to supply low, medium and high volumes. The company has also started supplying volume
cable assemblies to a second tier UK automotive supplier with plans in place to be involved in new vehicle platforms by Spring 2023. This growth, coupled with opportunities in ‘EV
Markets’, places the business at the forefront of supply for infrastructure, equipment and vehicles. Clarke concluded: “In the last month alone, we
have increased our workforce by eight per cent, with further recruitment set to take place for both sites in the coming months. Our team are driven to keep investing and harnessing the future!”

FILTRATION MATTERS: BOFA’S NEW PODCAST
B OFA has
launched a new podcast series
highlighting innovation in portable industrial fume and dust filtration. ‘Filtration Matters’ will be engaging BOFA’s expert team in discussions about how extraction system design is
helping companies to improve productivity across multiple sector industries including laser, 3D printing, electronics and printing, while also supporting workplace environmental strategies. In the first of the series, Josh Evans, an applications engineer at BOFA, goes back to basics, explaining the underlying principles of filtration and how manufacturers can go about specifying technology tailored to their processes. As Evans explained: “Almost all
manufacturers need filtration technology to remove emissions from a process and return clean air back into the workplace. This not only makes for a healthier workplace, it also helps protect investment in equipment to enhance productivity and avoid unscheduled downtime.” You can listen to the ‘Filtration Matters’ podcast via the following link:
