S
pring is coming, at last. It’s a key time of year for DIY but for many, it might feel like we are still mopping up, after
the wettest winter in 130 years. We’ve had more than eight named storms since September 2023 – the highest in any season to be named by the Met Office – and the period between July and December last year has been the wettest on record since 1890.
This has an impact on everything – and could impact DIY’s traditional Easter sales boost. It certainly means the products need to be targeted well and be able to cope with the climate. Wet weather has an effect on retail – while food sales go up, non-food can take a hit. Last summer’s wet weather led to reports of a 1.7% drop in sales in some areas, although e-commerce unsurprisingly fared better, as shoppers bought goods from the comfort of their sofas. As we all prepare for spring – one of the busiest times in the DIY calendar - it’s vital that we recognise the role the changing weather plays in consumer habits. We may be seeing out a really wet winter, but
is effective across all weathers and provides high performing strong adhesive. Consumers need sturdy adhesive tapes that can cope with any weather, helping things get secured, fixed and ready for the warmer months ahead – even if the work itself needs doing in the rain! Adhesives, tapes and sealants need to work in all weathers. “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”, so the saying goes. We agree. There’s no such thing as bad DIY weather, only unsuitable DIY products.
