In view of the rapid pace of design development it really makes sense for retailers to try and find the time to visit some of the international shows where key product launches take place so that they can keep abreast of important trends and be the first to make the latest designs available to their customers.


Inspirational retail space One retailer which certainly has its eye on the ball is the winner of the TTA’s Best Retail Showroom Award for 2017 – Casa Ceramica of Manchester. In 2015 the company decided to create a style of showroom not often seen in the UK, based in a former garden centre. The vision was to create a gallery- style showroom which would show customers how tiles can be used in different environments. The entrance (pictured below) is certainly striking. The black and white floor was designed so that the floor appears flat when viewed by the naked eye but is transformed when viewed through a camera lens, creating what appears to be a


floor with a huge dip in it. Within the store itself dedicated


areas of the showroom include handmade and unusual pieces from around the world. Designers and architects regularly use the showroom as a source of inspiration on their projects. Other areas include a fully-working wet room and toilet area tiled in Italian porcelain, as well as an outdoor display area. Comments from visitors suggest that this is one of the most significant tile showrooms in the UK with a very extensive product range and an atmosphere which is more reminiscent of an art gallery than a retail shop. The TTA encourages excellence among all its retail members and there are member companies all over the country who promote the latest products using the most up-to-date display techniques. They demonstrate what is possible from today’s tile industry and the level of choice, quality and retail ambience which is increasingly expected by modern consumers.
