John Lewis Partnership names new chairman


The retailer has announced the appointment of Sharon White as its sixth chairman, replacing Sir Charlie Mayfield when he steps down from the role in early 2020. Since March 2015, Ms White has been the chief executive of Ofcom, the UK’s communications services regulator. Before joining Ofcom, she was Second Permanent Secretary at the Treasury, responsible for overseeing the


public finances


and, prior to that role, she held board level positions at the Ministry of Justice and the Department for International Development. She has also worked as an adviser at the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit and in Washington DC as a senior economist at the World Bank.


Ms White is also a non- executive board member of Barratt Developments Plc, the UK FTSE 100 house builder and a Trustee of Sadler’s Wells Trust Ltd. She is a trained economist and studied at Cambridge University and University College London. Former TP digital and marketing manager takes up BHETA role


BHETA has appointed former Travis Perkins senior digital and trade marketing manager, Stephen Richardson as marketing manager. In the new role, created as part of the Association’s restructure, Mr


Richardson will report to COO Will Jones. He will combine responsibility for the trade association’s overall positioning, profile, product and membership expansion with responsibility for the Exclusively brand, driving the leading housewares and small electricals exhibition. Mr Richardson has more than 20 years’ experience of both B2B and B2C marketing roles in blue chip organisations. Prior to his eight-year career at Travis Perkins, he spent 10 years at Focus DIY, latterly as marketing strategy and development controller. Before that he worked in a senior marketing role for Collectable World Studios.

Beth Chatto OBE to be awarded iconic Horticultural Hero Award


Gardening pioneer, Beth Chatto OBE VMH, is to be posthumously named 2019’s Iconic Horticultural Hero at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival next month. Ms Chatto, who sadly passed away in 2018, aged 94, was the founder of the Beth Chatto Gardens in Elmstead Market and her “right plant in the right place” ethos has inspired generations of gardeners.

As part of the 2019 Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, the RHS will reveal a drought-resistant garden in tribute to Ms Chatto. The garden will honour the influential plantswoman, as it champions her ethos of sustainable planting when gardening in difficult conditions. The garden has been designed by Beth Chatto’s garden and nursery director David Ward, who worked alongside her for over 35 years, and aims to encourage the next generation of gardeners to consider a style of planting that will ensure gardens are ready for the future.
