A portion of the label with no adhesive hangs off the edge of the web like a “flag” making it visible in the wound roll. Novation’s WebFlaggers can be triggered manually, or from any inspection system or machine signal. The outdated practice of manually marking moving webs is
extremely dangerous, and causes countless injuries every year. As a result, many machine builders outfit their lines with guarding and interlocks making it impossible to access the moving web. Automatic web flagging marks webs behind guards and keeps hands away from the moving product and machine components. Hand marking is also inaccurate and costly. By the time a defect
is noticed and the web is hand marked, many meters of flawed product can pass and be wound into the process roll. And the same inaccuracy occurs once the defect has been corrected, when web is typically marked again. These inaccuracies result in wasted time and product on the next process where the flawed material is culled out.
Another benefit to automatic web marking is that it can be used in conjunction with digital roll mapping, providing a complete solution for tracking and identifying defects. Novation’s ScrapTracker system applies pre-printed, numbered, bar-coded flags and creates roll maps with each flag ID number, defect location, amount and type. This data file can be printed as a report or uploaded to any plant data storage device. The roll map is used to identify the type of defect to be removed and to create custom reports for scrap.
