Adhesive Applications

Preventing counterfeiting and tampering in the

pharmaceutical sector Ensuring and tracking the authenticity and integrity of one’s products is a challenge that affects all sectors, says Pierre Mahiet global business development manager pharma & HPC at Fedrigoni

W

hile in the past it was mostly high- fashion clothing and accessories that were

counterfeited, in recent years the counterfeit market has also affected gourmet food, cosmetics, toys and even the pharmaceutical sector. Thanks to the synergy between its Paper and Self-Adhesives Business Units, the Fedrigoni Group, a leading global player in the production of special high value-added papers for luxury packaging and other creative applications, as well as self- adhesive materials for the creation of premium labels, has created highly customisable brand protection solutions, with different materials and multiple functionalities, which allow it to specifically respond to the anti- counterfeiting and anti-tampering objectives targeted for each sector. To prevent the distribution of dangerous products with incorrect indications, Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives has developed a range of UV-visible pigments for labelling and tamper- evident solutions for the packaging of pharmaceutical products, developed in compliance with the European Directive on Counterfeit and Falsified Medicines (2011/62/EU). Each package must bear a serial identification number and be sealed to make any attempt at tampering visible. The special adhesive AP995, found in various self-adhesive solutions for the pharmaceutical sector, is formulated, for example, to tear the cardboard

packaging of the drug in the event of a tampering attempt. Void polyester materials contain an invisible weft on the underside of the label, which separates from the label face and remains visible on the product. In addition, Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives uses low migration adhesives to prevent consumers from being exposed to potential hazards.

The product range extends from flexible face materials and high cohesion adhesives for small-diameter

containers to tear-resistant solutions for infusion bags, solutions for sterilisation processes and resistant to high temperatures, and a variety of adhesives suitable for different surfaces. Reduced-thickness PP and PET faces for small-diameter containers (7-15 mm), for example, solve the problem of lifting edges. Perfect functionality is ensured by the use of the high-performance solvent-based acrylic adhesives AP907 and AP908 for film materials, and the acrylic emulsion adhesive AP912 for paper materials. Patient safety is our priority in the development of all labelling solutions for the pharmaceutical sector.
