Ellco Etikett twice certified

his month, global director of sales for Packaging & Brand at Xrite Pantone, Cindy Cooperman, has taken part in a Q&A with Converter, providing information on extended colour gamut printing and the benefits of printing with a fixed palette of ink colours.

Sustainability is a hot topic again with the controversial proposed tax on single-use plastic raising questions over how to best recover and recycle this material. Richard McKinlay, head of Circular Economy at resource recovery specialist Axion discusses which will do more to incentivise more recycling - imposing taxes or offering deposit return schemes. Also in this issue we ask is the trend for in mould labelling here to stay? When

it comes to creating head-turning packaging, in mould labelling triumphs over adhesive printed labels for quality, production costs, sustainability and

emotional brand connections.

The internet of labels: FINAT Technical Seminar 2018

The unusually extended supply chain for the self- adhesive label industry always makes the biennial FINAT Technical Seminar an interesting event in many ways. It brings together a diverse community – all of whom have a strong interest in technical advances that will impact labelling and packaging. This year’s event, held in Barcelona for the sixth time, was no exception. Over two days, March 7-9, the seminar combined networking and exploring and evaluating the ‘challenges in the label market’ that constituted the event’s chosen agenda. The seminar included discussions with keynote speaker, Andy Hobsbawm (UK), co-

founder and CMO of leading Internet of Things smart products platform EVRYTHNG; Günther Dieroff (SE), sales and marketing manager of Swedish label printers Beneli; Xeikon’s director, product management, Jeroen van Bauwel; Esko’s director, solutions marketing, Geert de Proost; Daragh Whelan , process manager at Bobst; and MPS Systems’ global marketing manager Marjolein Ekkelboom.

Weber launches new repair parts website

Weber Packaging Solutions has now made it easier to shop for replacement repair parts for labelling systems and popular label printers by opening their new e- commerce website, www.weberserviceparts.com. The site carries a wide range of repair items and spare parts kits for many Weber labelling systems, including their Model 5300, Model 4300, and LA-4050 label printer- applicators and the Alpha Compact and Herma H400 label applicators, as well as a comprehensive collection of replacement printheads for Zebra, Sato and Datamax label printers and replacement print engines from Zebra and Sato for label print-apply systems. The new website makes it easy to not only get repair parts, but you can also schedule service calls or contact technicians for help with your labelling problems. Weber has tried to create a better experience for packaging professionals to get the help they need to keep their production online.

Ellco Etikett started 2018 by becoming the only label printing company in Norway to be certified by the strict ISO standards in both quality and environmental management. This project started off early in 2017. Ellco Etikett had recently lost a large tender by an old customer. This is partly due to the lack of a quality certification. Christian Egedius, CEO, said: “That really triggered something in us. Over the years we have worked hard to improve the quality of our systems, and now we lost the tender due to a lack of an official certification? What a wakeup call! I believe it took less than an hour before we had secured a meeting with a consultant on the matter.” Kiwa Technological Institute got the assignment, and a timetable was soon in place. According to the consultant at Kiwa, Ellco Etikett was mature enough as a quality provider to certify for two standards at the same time. Thus, the quality and development manager of the label company, Jarl-André Skarsten, became the project leader for the certification of NS- EN ISO 9001:2015 and NS-EN ISO 14001. He quickly got the hang of it and it is largely thanks to him that Ellco Etikett can shine in the glory of having the ISO titles today.

New cup is simply the best

In partnership with German tool producer Marbach, RPC Bebo has developed a unique thermoformed screw closure system. Called ‘Turner’, the

system comprises a cup,

lid and lidding film, which is sealed on the cup’s seal flange to cover the lid’s entire surface. To open, consumers peal back the lidding film and turn the lid in a 45° counter-clockwise rotation. This easy-open and reliable reclosing offers excellent on-the-go benefits. In addition to a variety of food-to-go applications including ice cream, snacks and sweets, the Turner cup and film is also an ideal alternative pack solution for pet foods. It can be specified with barrier properties for protection against oxygen, water vapour, UV and light. To ensure effective branding and on-shelf differentiation and appeal, a wide range of decoration technologies is available. In common with other RPC Bebo products, these include high definition printing, labelling and premium In-Mould Label Thermoforming (IML-T) for the cup, while the lid can utilise RPC Bebo’s patented high quality Bebo Print for complete edge-to- edge coverage.
