contents GARDEN CENTRE UPDATE

Let your customers know you’re there to help

The season is well and truly under way. With the Spring bank holidays providing an opportunity for people to get out and into their gardens, garden centres should be seeing the benefit.

The weather has picked up, certainly in the south east, and while there will be cold spells to get through yet, that upward curve will mean more time spent outdoors, and more interest in finally sorting out those garden jobs that have been on hold for the past few months.

That might be planting up a couple of pots, or just trimming back plants to encourage growth, or making the lawn a bit neater, or it could be a major investment in redeveloping an entire garden.

It’s not just plants that people are looking for; tools and equipment to make gardening easier, or just to get the basic jobs done, are always essential.

As an example, in recent weeks I have been out buying plants at my local independent garden centre, digging over beds and planting up my new acquisitions, as well as doing some lawn maintenance and using a pressure washer on the paving stones. I am no great gardener, but all of these activities have resulted in money spent on the garden. The improving weather will only see more and more people willing to invest a bit of cash in their outdoor spaces. Be sure to let your local customer base know you’re ready to give them everything they need to make the most of their garden.
