Light renovation for energy efficiency

Modernising the lighting can help to save energy and maximise efficiency in existing buildings.

M

any businesses today are faced with the challenge of replacing outdated lighting systems and energy-intensive lamps. Here, lighting manufacturer LTS Licht & Leuchten (LTS) shares five steps to energy-efficient lighting renovation.

Old lighting systems are usually inefficient, leading to high energy costs and more frequent maintenance. Furthermore, they often do not comply with the latest EU and Ecodesign directives, which can potentially lead to legal and safety-related issues.

Sustainable lighting systems, such as those produced by LTS, a manufacturer from the south of Germany, facilitate a seamless transition to energy-efficiency and upgraded illumination.

What are the options?

Complete replacement of existing solutions

This allows the client to change over to state-of-the-art LED technology and lighting systems, which has numerous advantages such as improved energy efficiency and reduced costs. Luminaire design and LEDs perfectly complement each other. In addition, you can benefit from funding through the Federal Grant Programme for Efficient Buildings which reduces the payback time of your investment.

Light renovation through refurbishment

Refurbishment means that existing lights are upgraded with the latest LED technology. This saves material and time, reduces waste and protects the environment.

“Our top priority is to maintain the premium quality of our products and to develop efficient and resource-preserving lighting solutions,” said Stefan Hölzel, managing director of LTS.

1. Analysis of the existing solution and assessment of future requirements The renovation process starts with a proper analysis of existing lighting systems and their performance. This is the starting point for planning the new lighting, allowing for objectives such as improving lighting quality, energy savings or complying with certain standards to be prioritised.

2. Customised product selection and lighting design

The selection of the right products is imperative for a successful renovation. Customised options should take into consideration technical aspects such as existing cut-outs, luminous intensity and installation depth. Solutions such as dimmable luminaires, controlled systems or the integration of new equipment into existing lighting systems should blend in with the existing environment.

3. Compliance with latest standards and increased efficiency

All new lighting solutions should comply with the latest EU and Ecodesign directives. LEDs offer excellent energy efficiency, which means up to 80% less power is consumed compared to traditional lamps. Renovating a lighting system is also a great opportunity for considering a plug-and-play solution, such as LTS’s Organic Response. The smart lighting control system allows for additional cost savings based on lower energy consumption thanks to presence- based lighting control with enormous efficiency increases.

4. Amortisation and eligibility for funding Renovating lighting solutions must be efficient and economical at the same time. LTS’s efficiency calculator can analyse the payback period and calculate potential savings of using LED lamps. It is also important to assess potential government funding to make the investment as profitable as possible.

5. Focus on sustainability The luminaires selected should be easily recyclable, and electronic components upgradable to ensure their longevity. These measures help to maximise the service life of lighting systems while minimising waste, thereby conserving resources and protecting the environment. Investing in sustainable lighting solutions reduces long-term operating costs, as durable and energy-efficient products require less maintenance and replacement. What’s more, actively contributing to environmental protection reflects the values of the client as a company, and will be positively perceived by both their customers and employees.
