Power with reliability from Relec Electronics

This article gives an insight into Relec Electronics and what they do with the added use of two case studies to further demonstrate their knowledge

D

orset based Relec Electronics are a speciality supplier of electronic components and systems for a wide range of applications in the communications, transportation and general industry sectors. With a team of qualified engineers, the company which was established over 38 years ago is able to offer a wealth of technical and application expertise in order to make sure that the most suitable product is selected for the application in question. Relec can also offer customised manufacturing options to give greater flexibility to the range of solutions offered. The portfolio of products is designed

to provide the most reliable and rugged solutions for the client covering high performance power conversion products, AC DC power supplies, DC DC converters, DC AC inverters, displays, EMC filters and vandal-proof switches. Products offered for rail applications

are compliant with national and international railway standards EN50121- 3-2, EN50155. Furthermore, the comprehensive and easy to navigate website shows the particular standard to which a product is compliant. In addition, the product may also benefit from having been listed by Network Rail PADS (Parts and Drawing System).

Providing power with reliability A key component in the design of nearly all mains powered electrical and electronic equipment is the AC DC power supply. Relec can supply a very wide range of AC DC PSU's from a 5W plug top, desktop or PCB mounting device, through to very large battery backed, standby systems that can be 19" rack mounted. Relec Electronics can also provide you with a variety of chassis mounting power supplies, including single, dual and quad output industry standard modules with configurable power supplies starting at 300W up to 2kW in output power. Thanks to the team of highly qualified engineers available, the company is able to provide in depth technical advice on a range of specialist AC DC power supplies for a wide range of industrial applications but especially medical, railway and DIN rail mounting applications.

Case study: desk top power supply for the medical industry

The requirement: For this project a medically approved desktop power supply was sought to power a device with various motors and valves for a clinical study. The output stipulated was 6VDC with a current not exceeding 5A, due to restrictions of the connectors required for the trial. The solution: See Image 1.

Certification: CEC level VI; 2 x MOPP; UL/cUL60601; EN/IEC60601, TUV; CB; CE; FCC

With an initial requirement of 6VDC at 5A, a standard product was selected which met the output requirements and had all the necessary medical approvals. As the design evolved it transpired that the device required more power than originally specified, however due to the 5A constraint this could not be achieved by a higher current device. Relec proposed a solution of using a 9VDC medical desktop from the same series, by increasing the voltage of the components within the device to 9V the higher power requirement could be met whilst maintaining the current maximum of 5A. Documentation for the medical approvals along with samples and datasheets supported the equipment through EMC testing and into production.

Case study: kitchen ventilation requirement

Turning away from the highly specific demands of the medical industry, applications nearer home, literally, provide another example of the wealth of application experience brought into play to provide a solution in a potentially hazardous and life threatening situation. The requirement:

The application called for a low profile, low cost PCB mount AC DC power supply to power monitoring and control electronics in a kitchen ventilation management system. The control box manages air conditioning and fan control whilst also providing gas detection.

Components in Electronics

The solution: See Image 2.

The LD10 has a wide 85 to 264VAC input with a single fixed DC output in a compact PCB mount package just 19mm high, which provided a good physical fit for this project. The kitchen environment also dictated extended operation at elevated temperatures; again the LD10 fulfils this with an operating temperature range of minus 20°C to +70°C. A 300,000 hour MTBF backed with a three year warranty confirm that the LD10 will offer the required long term reliability, along with short lead times and a sensible price enable it to fit all of the requirements.

These two case studies demonstrate how Relec has been very deliberate and targeted in selecting a strategy of providing specialist products for demanding industries and ensuring that they can offer the best technical support both at the design stage and in after sales service and above all the ability to offer industry compliant products to ensure safe and reliable operation.
