3. Consider keeping inventory on-site
Some customers need instant accessibility and want stock of their regularly used commod- ity components on site, but many entrepreneurial businesses lack the inventory manage- ment experience or resource to manage this effectively by themselves and thus rely on the distributor to manage this inventory to avoid costly excess and expensive line stops due to shortages. These VMI services have traditionally had a relatively high entry level cost, however Anglia changed the model and took away barriers to entry with the introduction of Anglia 80/20. This easy to implement VMI service has been a great suc- cess, giving customers the reassurance of instantly accessible in- ventory held at their premises on a pay as you use basis. This is a major advantage at any time, but especially when component supply is restricted. During the year, as Brexit deadlines came and went, we gave Anglia 80/20 customers the option to hold increased levels of in- ventory, ahead of any potential disruption. Once customers’ confidence returned, they consumed the extra inventory as required. This is an option we will continue to offer customers during the potential period of disruption caused by Brexit.
5. Look for the Bright Spots Anglia’s ‘top pick’ for growth in 2020 is hand- held portable devices. Technologies that sup- port ‘untethered’ instru- ments and diagnostic equipment are in de- mand. They often rely on
custom lithium ion battery packs as a source of power, and most have a compact customised dis- play, usually based on low power TFT or OLED tech- nology. M2M communications and IoT technology should also do well – both in these applications and in other markets too. Outlook Anglia are looking forward to working ever more closely with our customers and partner suppliers in the New Year. We have many ex- amples of customers (not always big businesses) who are leading their industries with technologies in the medical, security, industrial and other fields. Such innovative businesses will ultimately always succeed in the long term. Providing our customers aren’t lulled into a false sense of security with the current abundance of component supply and main- tain their forward order cover for the year ahead, there is every reason to expect that they, and we, will do well. 4. Keep an eye on Anglia Live The Anglia Live website has become an online reference point for anyone seeking technical data or availability information for electronic components. We are open with our customers, and pub- lish live inventory levels, lead-times and competitive pricing on Anglia Live. Much of the informa- tion is available to any visitor – you don’t even have to be an Anglia customer to benefit. We can give the best support to customers who are equally transparent with us, sharing fore- casts and where possible committing to scheduled orders. Shortages are not a new thing in the electronics industry: we’ve always managed to work around them and will do our best to work around them this time too. It is extremely important in a tight market to have transparency.
