C

oncerns over staffi ng are driving investments in robotics in particular and automation in general. A recent study

by HSBC found that a third of all UK companies are planning to focus capital investment on automation, with concerns about being able to recruit enough people driving the trend.

This is not just happening in the UK.

A recent report suggested Amazon had concluded it would simply start running out of people to employ in parts of the US as early as this year. It’s no coincidence then that Amazon has ramped up its investment in robotics, with the launch of its fi rst Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) – Proteus – in June. Ten years on from its acquisition of robotics fi rm Kiva, Amazon now has over half a million robots in service.

The HSBC survey also suggested that many UK businesses will increase spending and investment despite the current economic headwinds, with 45% saying that they expect to increase capital expenditure by 9% in 2022.
