he fi rst UKIVA’s Machine Vision Conference and Exhibition (MVC 2022) returns to the Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes, UK, on 28 April,
2022. With its wide-ranging conference programme, this live event will once again act as a focal point for the latest vision trends and technologies and their uses in real-life applications, as well as off ering the opportunity to see a wide range of latest vision products. This will be delivered by Seb Millar, who is Machine Learning Engineering Manager at Recycleye, a company specialising in the application of advanced machine learning, computer vision and robotics to improve waste recycling effi ciencies at Materials Recycling or Recovery Facilities. MVC 2022 has established an impressive
reputation for its far-reaching educational conference programme, featuring a busy technical seminar programme, all delivered by very experienced and knowledgeable vision specialists. Returning as a live event in the UK after an absence of two years, MVC 2022 will provide a unique informal environment where visitors and experts can interact to discuss any aspect of machine vision. The conference programme typically extends across eight diff erent technical themes and has content designed both for those who want to learn more about the fundamentals of vision technology, as well as experienced practitioners who are keen to explore the latest developments in topics such as deep learning, embedded vision and other leading-edge vision technologies. Keynote addresses have always proved to be hugely popular at previous MVC events and Seb Millar’s presentation for 2022 is expected to continue that trend. Millar leads a team at Recycle developing machine-learning applications for waste material detection and selection for recycling in the waste industry. His talk is entitled: ‘Trash to cash – turning the world’s waste into resource’. Only a small percentage of the plastic waste generated each year is recycled but in real-world applications, detecting crushed, shredded, overlapping and dirty plastic recyclables is not easy with computer vision. Millar’s presentation will cover how Recycleye Vision and Robotics have gone from an idea at Imperial College, London, to installation in multi-million pound facilities across Europe. Economics are a crucial element of the recycling eff ort. Recycleye CEO, Victor Dewulf, said that: “Waste is not recycled when the cost of recycling exceeds the value of the sorted material. By lowering the cost of recycling with artifi cial intelligence and robotics, this threshold can be broken, and removal chains can be fully integrated back into supply chains”. Current UK regulation requires facilities to sample just 0.05% of waste, but the combination of AI, smart analytics and low-cost cameras enables 100% analysis.
Another essential component of MVC 2022 is the focus on the latest vision technology. Even through the height of the pandemic, vision suppliers have continued to bring new products to market. New image sensors with exciting new capabilities have been developed; new illumination sources have
emerged, AI capabilities have improved, image processing toolkits have been enhanced, and a lot more. Now for the fi rst time in two years, a dedicated machine vision exhibition returns to the UK alongside the conference. The exhibition section at MVC 2022 will represent an excellent cross-section of the industrial vision industry, with many world-renowned manufacturers, leading vision technology suppliers and distributors and vision systems integrators available to demonstrate product and discuss how their specialist expertise can help solve vision problems.
