here’s no denying it: The past year has been one of the toughest in a generation – the Queen even likened it to the WW2 years! The lockdowns have altered the way we live and work – possibly forever.
In many cases, employers – liking it or not –
relaxed their aversion to staff working from home, which proved positive and productive. Some employees liked the move, others didn’t – in all cases it took some adjusting, yet, importantly, it benefited companies during the pandemic, as well as the environment.

These dramatic times have also brought worker anxieties. A recent survey exposed the fear of losing a job for nearly 30% of the workforce. Many are working extra hard to deliver over and above what is expected of them to keep their job safe. A sixth of respondents claim being nervous about asking for extra support with a heavy workload, and a fifth said they would be too anxious to ask for a payrise following a workload increase. A sixth are worried about being asked to work extended hours.
These experiences are shared across all industries. Sadly, they bring uncomfortable truths about some employers, who have used this time to not only streamline their workforce, but to place additional workloads on the remaining staff. There are instances aplenty where employees have taken on extra jobs that pre-pandemic would have taken two or even three full-time staff. Although businesses try to survive in the current climate, seeing their staff take on more – either for the fear of furlough or losing their jobs, or in many cases purely because they want to help the company survive – some employers have taken advantage.
Is this tight squeeze likely to last when the economy picks up? I sincerely hope not! Since the return to a fully-functional economy will be a marathon and not a sprint, it’s best to err on the side of balance rather than exploitation – everyone works harder when they feel they are part of something.
