Futuro from Huhtamaki is the fi rst 100% plastic-
free egg carton in Europe design also makes the cartons 10% lighter than standard fi bre cartons, reducing their carbon footprint. With a long tradition of selling fresh and cooked coloured eggs, Moos-Butzen is the fi rst distributor to start using Futuro egg cartons this June.
Huhtamaki, a provider of sustainable packaging solutions, is launching Futuro, the fi rst 100% plastic-free egg carton in Europe for cooked coloured eggs. Hard-boiled eggs are currently regularly packed and sold in plastic packaging for sale in supermarkets. The Huhtamaki innovation is especially relevant in Germany, where hard-boiled eggs or “Bunte Eier” remain a popular snack, with over 80 million packs sold yearly. “This is a step forward in helping our customers meet their sustainability targets and drive a circular economy. By simply switching to our fi bre-based Futuro cartons, Germany could eliminate almost 2,400 metric tons of plastic from packaging eggs yearly,” said Hilbrand van Dijk, Huhtamaki Sales & Marketing Manager. Futuro cartons are made of post- consumer recycled fi bre, and in Germany they can be recycled in the paper and cardboard stream as well as composted after use at home or in an industrial composting facility. Following the success of 2020’s virtual initiative which attracted over 4,550 young people, this year’s event, running from 4-15 October, will combine online and in- person experiences. “With 37 schools already signed up for Bradford Manufacturing Weeks 2021 and manufacturers taking advantage of our virtual event options, it’s clear that our fortnight of events has become an important part of the year for many schools,” said Suzanne Watson, President of Bradford Chamber of Commerce. “Bradford’s strong manufacturing sector has a responsibility to encourage school pupils to fi nd out more about the opportunities for fulfi lling careers on their doorstep, and our programme of events this year – many led by current apprentices – is designed to do just that.”
