British Automation and Robot Association (BARA) - www.bara.org.uk

ome 40% of people have considered starting a business over the past year, reveals a new survey. Sadly, almost all (38%) are put off by having limited knowledge of how a business is run and no access to help, including funds. If lockdown has revealed anything, it’s that shopping doesn’t have to be in physical stores, so, naturally, nearly a third of these people consider a business in online retail, and around a fifth look to the food and drink sector. A thousand people were interviewed on the subject of starting a new business by Perrys Chartered Accountants, in the effort to highlight the lack of support that exists for start-ups and SMEs.

“While there is support in the form of government incentives and other services for start-up businesses, many people hoping to invest in a new venture are often in the dark when it comes to the basics, and lack the right help, advice and support,” said Steve Hale, partner at Perrys Chartered Accountants. I don’t know about you, but I may be in those 40% – I would like to start something interesting and exciting, something new and fresh. Making a success of it would be great fun, even though most likely very hard work (which, BTW, we are already doing now!). And, like those same interviewees, it’s off-putting to me that there’s no single hub of information to gain basic knowledge from about starting a new business. Yet, this is crucial, since new companies can be very inventive, and in many ways the bloodline of the economy.

Something should be done about this! As Hale aptly puts it: “The UK is heavily reliant on SMEs and start-up businesses for income and employment. Their presence will be even more important now we’ve left the EU, so it makes sense that there should be more investment in helping start-ups to get up and running in the best possible way from the outset. However, we also know that 60% of businesses will fail in the first three years due to a lack of understanding of basic business concepts. One way we are tackling this is by providing start-up businesses with free, informal meetings, offering useful advice to help them succeed.”
