NEWS ‘Water Oscar’ winner M&E WEEK –A FESTIVAL OF INNOVATION

BB has won the 2023 Global Water Awards in the category “Smart Water Project of the Year” for its collaboration with Wellington Water, the water services provider for the Wellington region of New Zealand. The award was presented during the Global Water Summit in Berlin, Germany. “If there’s a ‘Water Oscar’ out there, this is it, and we just won it. This is an incredible recognition,” said Amina Hamidi, Managing Director, ABB Instrumentation. “Innovation is at the core of everything we do, and the Global Water Summit is one of the most important gatherings within the international water industry. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication that the ABB team demonstrates in helping the industry supply safe and healthy drinking water to communities around the globe.”

Wellington Water manages the water infrastructure for six New Zealand councils. This includes 105 water pump stations, 248 wastewater pump stations, 148 reservoirs and 27 storm water pump stations at various sites. Wellington Water worked closely with ABB to take the resiliency of its drinking water infrastructure to the next level, implementing smart flow meters that track water flow in real time, and variable frequency drives to deliver crucial efficiency gains. With pumping occupying the lion’s share of a utility’s energy consumption, ABB’s intelligent drives deliver crucial efficiency gains, squeezing important savings from one of the water cycle’s most intensive energy users. At the same time, built-in verification tools and anomaly detection capabilities enable the operators to secure the longevity of their devices. Recorded data is easily exported for further analysis and evaluation so that critical factors can be identified earlier, and corrective actions are taken more quickly. go.abb/processautomation

ineteen Group is pleased to announce an incredible range of activities that will take place during Manufacturing & Engineering Week 2023. The week-long festival has four centrepiece exhibitions and combines both live and digital events.

A major part of the event is the free conference programme that will take place across two Keynote Conferences and six Solutions Theatres. On Day 1 the keynote address in the main theatre will come from Government on the topic of their plans for supporting UK manufacturing, while on Day 2 the shadow government will talk on the same subject. The conference agendas include topics such as ‘What next for UK manufacturing?’ led by former Siemens UK CEO Juergen Maier, and ‘The story of a British Engineering Icon’ (Triumph Motorcycles). Similarly, top level support for M&E Week can be seen in the make-up of its advisory council with such luminaries as Stephen Phipson CBE, Chief Executive Make UK chairing the council, and Clare Porter, Head of manufacturing Dept for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Rosa Wilkinson, Director of Policy, High Value Manufacturing Catapult, being high profile members. Highlighting innovation is at the forefront of M&E Week. Made Smarter’s Innovation Alley, for example, will showcase all the new and developing technologies that will change the landscape of manufacturing over the next five to ten years. Similarly, the Innovation Village, run by the seven High Value Manufacturing Catapult research and technology centres, is an interactive demonstration area showing the technological advances that will transform industry for a sustainable world. M&E Week will also celebrate its current leaders with a ‘Best of British’ showcase, featuring domestic manufacturing, world-

he Chemical Business Association (CBA) recently held its famous Annual Lunch, where it also launched its centennial year celebrations in style, along with its member companies, special guests, and dignitaries from around the world. The event, affectionately known as “Floggers Lunch” took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 26 April 2023. To mark this momentous milestone, the Association received a letter from King Charles III who sent his “best wishes...for a memorable and enjoyable ‘Floggers Lunch’” to the more than 1,100 professionals from its member and affiliate member companies and their guests, who collectively are the main chemical industry interface providing products and services to virtually every sector.

The King’s letter, delightfully received by CBA CEO Tim Doggett, highlighted His Majesty’s interest in learning about the Association’s history. In particular, the King expressed his enthusiasm in learning the scope of sectors supported by the CBA,

beating new designs, innovative modes of manufacture, products that redefine categories and export successes that plant the flag in overseas markets. Continuing the theme of best in class, The Manufacturer magazine will celebrate the achievements of 100 inspiring individuals from the UK's manufacturing sector at its Top 100 awards ceremony. The winners will be announced at the ceremony on the 7th of June. Recognising the fact that the future of the industrial sector is as much about people as it is about technology is the Manufacturers of the Future programme developed with partners Engineering UK, Make UK, Engineers Without Borders UK and the IMechE. Taking place on the afternoon of Day 2 (8th June) the event enables students and apprentices, about to take the first step into their careers, to engage with the rapidly evolving world of manufacturing.

M&E Week has also announced that Engineers Without Borders UK has become its official charity partner.

The week beginning 5th June 2023 is Manufacturing & Engineering Week with the centrepiece exhibitions Design & Engineering Expo, Smart Factory Expo, Maintec and the Drives & Controls zone taking place at Birmingham’s NEC on 7th and 8th June. A visitor pass provides access to all events. www.mandeweek.co.uk

which has expanded over its 100-year history and today includes distributors, traders, logistics and service providers, as well as manufacturers and consultancies within the supply chain.

Whilst the Association celebrated its 100th year, its Future Council, which serves as a platform for emerging industry talent to network, learn and advocate, celebrated its first “Floggers Lunch” as a fully formed committee.

As has become customary, fundraising in aid of a nominated charity took place during the event. This year’s beneficiary, chosen by Kate Mingay, Managing Director of Dakram Materials and outgoing CBA Chair, is 3 Dads Walking and PAPYRUS, a charity aimed at raising awareness of suicide in young people. During the event, an incredible £12,000 was raised for this worthwhile cause. www.chemical.org.uk
