NO MORE FOREIGN BODIES IN RAW MATERIALS

‘Dymond Bulk’ is the new jewel in the crown of Minebea Intec’s product portfolio for X-ray inspection. This innovative inspection system was developed specifically with bulk goods in mind, and is suitable for processes between incoming goods and packaging lines in the food industry

A

t Minebea Intec we are often involved in projects to control processes at the

beginning of the production where raw materials are delivered. Ensuring the best possible quality here will translate into the best quality product leaving the production site. This is an area where our weighing

components and instrumentation are often used to accurately weigh ingredients into tanks and silos and even weigh the incoming trucks as part of the make-up of the weighbridge. We can then use Minebea Intec recipe and weighing systems to mix and batch out these raw ingredients.

QUALITY CONTROL As a manufacturer of a full range of both weighing and inspection systems we often get asked to advise on the best way to control not only the weight and quantity of the raw ingredients, but also the quality. The payback in quality checks early in the process is that any contaminated or substandard product can be discarded here before it has the added cost of processing and then being combined with other materials. For example, in the case of a cereal bar, contamination that came in with some seeds can’t later be separated from the nuts, and other components of the bar. Metal detection is one way to add a

quality CCP at the incoming stage of a process and will, of course, be set to reject the minimum amount of material around any metallic foreign body that is found.

ADDITIONAL CONTAMINANTS However, over recent years there has been a surge in the number of production lines being installed with X- ray systems at the finished pack stage. Quite often the main driver in this is the type of packaging used such as metallic trays and dishes or metal tins, which are clearly not metal detectable. Sometimes seen as secondary at the finished pack stage is the fact that X-ray can find

and coffee for non-metallic items that would be likely to contaminate these type of ‘straight from the field’ materials. A cleverly designed reject allows just the portion of the product stream containing the foreign body to be rejected, so wasting the minimum amount of precious raw material.

Bulk goods like nuts, smaller fruits, but also coffee and seeds, are reliably inspected and ejected by Dymond Bulk

IDENTIFYING FOREIGN BODIES Dymond Bulk not only identifies foreign bodies made from metal, plastic and stone, but also bits of dirt and glass, which has obvious benefits. “In food production, the ‘sorting and

additional contaminants other than just metallic, such as glass, stone and bone. Why not, then X-ray raw materials that

may be suseptible to these type of contaminants? Minebea Intec has recently released a brand new bulk X-ray system, the Dymond Bulk which shares software features with the popular Dymond range for packaged goods, so that for customers using this already at the finished goods stage there is minimal new training required. The Dymond Bulk can inspect raw materials such as nuts, small fruits, seeds, spices

cleaning’ stage for raw materials is by no means a precise science,” explained Michael Zabawski, Global Product Manager for Inspection at Minebea Intec. “Our X-ray inspection system Dymond Bulk can make a significant difference here, increasing safety and quality parameters even before the refinement process. Foreign bodies can also be detected and traced immediately.” The X-ray inspection system stands

out because it is so user friendly. Complex technologies have consciously been simplified for users and realised in a straightforward and intuitive HMI: from the intuitive menu navigation to the real-time detection via colour-based contamination analysis. The design of the Dymond Bulk follows hygienic design principles, which allows simple changing of the belt and easy cleaning of the inspection system. An optional multi- ejector with four ejection segments guarantees the targeted and economical elimination of foreign bodies from the product stream. Minebea Intec are available to advise the best way to control your process with a complete range of weighing components, complete scales, software and inspection systems.
