NEWS SCIENCE EMPLOYERS REVEAL AMBITIONS FOR APPRENTICESHIPS

The Science Industry Partnership (SIP), an employer-led membership alliance supported by Cogent Skills, has announced its latest Apprenticeship Survey findings and the launch of a new group to support the sector’s apprenticeship ambitions. Coinciding with National Apprenticeship Week 2021 (which took place on 8-14 February), the SIP’s new Apprenticeship Strategy Group will strengthen employer engagement to ensure the apprenticeship system accurately reflects the needs of employers. The new report provides insight into the use of apprenticeships and their funding after examining data from employers across the UK science industry. The latest figures reveal that whilst the science industry continues to embrace apprenticeships and technical education, more work is required to deliver the vision of apprenticeships for the sector.

The research shows that science-industry organisations have a COMMENT GET SMART

SME manufacturers using digital tools and technology to transform their businesses will share their inspiring stories at a free-to-access online summit. The virtual conference, Made

As the Covid-19 vaccine production, supply and usage continues apace, and infections and hospitalisations fall, can we dare to think of a post-pandemic world, where normal life resumes with the disease under control? While the pandemic has had

a detrimental effect on many aspect of our lives, it has actually accelerated the adoption of many useful technologies and new methods of working. In this issue, we look at the

shift to increased remote support (p.14), the adoption of robotics to meet changing consumer buying habits (p.34), and the key to unlocking manufacturing growth (p37). The road to recovery may be

rocky, but we have the technology in place to ease the process. Michelle Lea - Editor

Smarter: The journey to digital manufacturing, on March 10, will show manufacturers how to use and fast-track digital technology for a year of recovery, growth and resilience. Nutree Life, which makes

plant-based and vegan nutrition products, will share its success story where adopting automation and control technologies enabled it to cope with unprecedented demand during the pandemic. Other, SME manufacturers will also share stories of their experience of Made Smarter’s North West Adoption programme. The conference also features

a line-up of industry heavyweights such as Juergen Maier, chair of the Digital Catapult and co-chair of the Made Smarter Commission; and Stephen Phipson, the chief executive of Make UK, the manufacturers' organisation. www.madesmarter.uk

far greater proportion of Higher-Level Apprentices (51%) when compared across all sectors (19%) and that 18% of apprentices are working at Levels 6 or 7 (leaping from just 6% in 2018). Research was first undertaken in 2018 in response to the Life Sciences Sector Deal with the ambition of bolstering the 250,000 skilled scientific and technical employees needed through to 2025. The new SIP Apprenticeship Strategy Group will work collaboratively to improve accessibility and deliver the vision of apprenticeships for the science-using industries.

According to the research, there has been much progress made since 2018. The survey reveals that the Apprenticeship Levy system’s overall engagement has improved too with the vast majority of apprentices (95% of those surveyed) now funded via the Levy. https://www.scienceindustrypartnership.com/skills-issues/sip- apprenticeship-survey-2020

VEGA OPENS TRAINING CENTRE

After a year-long build, VEGA Controls has opened its own purpose-built

training and seminar centre and UK head office at ‘Metior House’, Maresfield, in the heart of Sussex.

The facility benefits from almost 10,000 square feet of training and meeting facilities for VEGA customers and stakeholders to use. These include: over 15 working, hands-on equipment and application models of level and pressure technologies, sited in their own networked demonstration area; state-of-the-art AV amenities; full sets of operational training equipment and interconnected desks. It also boasts a cafe/dining room, with outdoor seating and breakout area adjacent to woodland. Managing director Ray Tregale, said: “Along with our exciting new product portfolio, this is our vision and investment for the long term. Purchasing the land and carefully designing the building we need, was not just for now, but for decades to come.” He added “It's a statement of intent and shows our commitment to support product users and engineers across all industries, as well as our staff of course, and to demonstrate our confidence in the future of UK business.”

The location is around a 40 minute drive from Gatwick airport and 20 minutes from mainline railway stations connecting to London. Ample parking with EV charging is also available. The carbon-neutral building houses offices and service workshops. Tregale concluded: “When the situation allows, our doors will be open and we will look to encourage visitors for in-person product education and application training, and even for them to use just as a meeting place...” www.vega.com
