DUST EXTRACTION
BREATHE EASY: A CALL TO ACTION TO PROMOTE EFFECTIVE DUST EXTRACTION
about the dangers of dust in the workplace and encouraging businesses to implement effective dust control solutions.
As part of this campaign, we highlight the simple yet powerful fact that ‘a pint of dust’ can cause serious harm. The key message is that no exposure is safe, and that prevention and control are paramount.
Our dust extraction systems are designed to capture and remove harmful dust at its source, ensuring that it never has the chance to reach the worker’s lungs. Effective
Ira Morris, Country Manager at Dustcontrol UK, makes the call for improved protection from harmful dust and particles in the workplace
ung diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and lung cancer continue to be significant public health concerns, particularly in the workplace. In the UK, thousands of workers are at risk of developing these potentially life-threatening conditions due to long-term exposure to harmful dust and particles on the job. While the direct link between work-related dust exposure and lung disease is well- documented, the full extent of the problem remains a major public health challenge. The figures paint a stark picture. A report from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 2023 revealed that approximately 12,000 occupational lung disease-related deaths occur every year in the UK. Of these, a significant portion, 34%, can be attributed to COPD, while 24% of deaths are linked to non- asbestos related lung cancer. These statistics are a tragic reminder of the long-term consequences of workplace exposures that too often go unnoticed or unaddressed.
L Dust: A silent killer
Among the many harmful substances present in the workplace, dust remains one of the most pervasive and underestimated hazards. While the effects of asbestos are well known, many other forms of dust - from silica and wood dust to coal and cement dust - pose equally dangerous risks to workers' respiratory health. The rise in cases of silicosis, a condition caused by inhaling crystalline silica dust, has been particularly alarming in recent years. The growth of industries involving artificial stone cutting has seen a notable increase in silicosis diagnoses, prompting renewed attention on
dust control measures in the workplace. At Dustcontrol UK, we know this is a critical issue and we’re passionate about reducing the impact of harmful dust exposure on workers. As specialists in dust extraction, we know that the right systems and practices can make a world of difference in protecting respiratory health. Despite this, many workplaces still lack adequate dust extraction solutions, leaving employees vulnerable to long- term health problems. It is vital that businesses understand the gravity of the issue and take decisive action to protect their workforce.
The 'Dust to Dust' campaign At Dustcontrol, we are so intent on creating a safer environment in the workplace, in November 2024 we launched the Dust to Dust campaign - a vital initiative aimed at raising awareness
dust extraction systems are not just a legal requirement - they are a moral responsibility. Employers must take action to protect their staff from the debilitating effects of dust exposure, and it is incumbent upon the industry to adopt better practices.
Building a safer future for workers In tackling lung diseases caused by workplace exposures, there are two key areas that require immediate attention: prevention through better dust control and early intervention through health surveillance. It is clear that we cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to protecting the respiratory health of workers. The rise in cases of silicosis, along with the high rates of COPD and lung cancer, highlights the urgent need for businesses to prioritise dust control measures and invest in proper dust extraction systems. The Dust to Dust campaign is more than just a message - it's a call to action. As an industry, we must commit to improving the safety and health of workers by preventing dust exposure at its source, and ensuring that those affected receive the necessary care and support.
For businesses looking to protect their employees, the message is clear: invest in effective dust extraction today, and ensure a healthier, safer tomorrow. As we move forward, let’s continue to build on the progress made and focus on ensuring every worker’s right to breathe easy.
