From the
any of those I meet in my role as Editor of BSEE share my concerns about the
looming skills gap within the building industry.
So I was delighted to be invited to a round table discussion last month, organised by manufacturer, Super Rod’s MD, Malcolm Duncan.
The theme of the event was “How to attract the best talent into our industry”. Coincidentally, the previous day, I had attended the Electrical Contractors’ Association’s Apprentice of the Year Awards, sponsored by Edmundson Electrical.
The four regional winners are a credit to their profession and the overall winner, Harry Bartle, 21, of ECA member-firm Chris Bowker Ltd, will be a great ambassador for the industry. Malcolm’s round-table event, which attracted 30 key influencers, was buzzing with ideas, It is clear, however, that promoting careers within the industry starts with talking – opening the dialogue with local schools and colleges, offering work experience, explaining the variety of jobs on offer, committing to training and offering apprenticeships. Not every child is cut out for academia – despite the government’s desire to channel all kids into further education. On-the-job training is a valuable experience that can lead to a great career (and, without the debt that can mount up with a university education). Malcolm’s excellent initiative has got the industry talking and I look forward to seeing how we can all come together to help youngsters into this industry and into a great career. Look out for more on this in future issues.

ripwire, Inc, which provides security and compliance solutions for enterprises and industrial organisations, has released the results of a survey which assessed the cyber security challenges associated with smart city technologies. When asked if a cyber attack targeting critical city
T
infrastructure posed a threat to public safety, 88 percent of the respondents said, “yes”. In addition, 78 percent of the respondents stated there would likely be a cyber attack against smart city services in 2016. Smart cities use IT solutions to manage a wide range of city services, including smart grids, transportation, surveillance cameras, wastewater treatment and more.
Navigant Research anticipates that global smart city technology revenue will reach $36.8 billion in
2016. Despite growing profitability in the sector, many cyber security experts are wary that smart city technologies are being adopted faster than the technology needed to protect them. “While smart cities offer great efficiencies for their citizens, the same internet connectivity that enables these efficiencies can be used to deliver physical damage to infrastructure and also cause loss of life if accessed by

malicious actors,” said Rekha Shenoy, Vice President and General Manager of industrial cyber security for Belden, Tripwire’s parent company. Additional findings from the survey included: u81 percent of the respondents believe a cyber attack targeting critical city infrastructure could cause physical damage. u83 percent of the respondents are worried about cyber attacks
that target smart city transportation initiatives. uOnly three percent of the respondents believed there would not be a cyber attack against smart city services this year.
“As we use more and more technology to innovate around the management of cities and their infrastructure, we also create new attack surfaces that can be exploited,” said Tim Erlin, Director of IT Security and Risk Strategy for Tripwire.
“Protecting public infrastructure from cyber and physical attacks is a key consideration in the evolution of smart city
technologies. We need to build smart cities with cyber security in mind, not add it as an afterthought.”

“We had a traditional factoring
agreement, which provided us with 65% of invoice value when we raised it. However, we just didn’t know how much money we would have every month. If there was a delay in payment the money might not be available. To get a fixed lump of money in your bank for a fixed period is much better. You know where you are and you can plan with certainty.
