NET ZERO BUILDINGS
A regulatory push in the right direction
its DX cooling systems were over 20 years old and highly inefficient. Within a single day, the installation team replaced the old system with an IV Produkt Envistar Flex AHU, equipped with the integrated defrosting-free reversible heat pump, ThermoCooler HP R454B, Integrated Controls and IV Produkt Cloud connectivity. The results? A reduction of 108,000kWh per year in energy consumption, equal to 49kWh/ m2 in the upgraded areas. At today’s energy prices, the payback period is just 3.3 years. If energy prices rise further — as we’ve seen across Europe — the return on investment only accelerates.
Thanks to the modular Easy Access concept, on-site transportation and installations were seamless — even to a tight plant room with limited access. The flexible design of the units allowed us to preserve existing ductwork, reducing disruption, building work and the overall project costs.
While the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), revised in April 2024, no longer applies directly to the UK following Brexit, it continues to shape the broader conversation on building energy performance across Europe. The directive sets ambitious targets for EU Member States, including mandatory renovation of the worst-performing non- residential buildings and a requirement for all new buildings to be zero-emission by 2030. In the UK, many of the core principles of earlier EPBD versions were retained in national legislation prior to EU withdrawal — and these have since evolved through domestic policy. Most notably, the government introduced Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES), which prohibit the leasing of commercial properties with an EPC rating below E in England and Wales. Proposals are also in place to raise this minimum to a B rating by 2030, affecting a significant portion of the UK’s commercial stock. These requirements are reinforced by broader commitments under the UK’s Net Zero Strategy and Heat and Buildings Strategy, placing strong emphasis on decarbonisation of existing buildings. While no longer governed by EU law, the UK’s policy direction remains closely aligned with the ambitions of the EPBD — highlighting the growing pressure on property owners to prioritise energy efficiency and carbon reduction. As access to investment and financing becomes increasingly tied to a building’s energy performance, upgrades such as replacing older AHUs are moving from optional improvements to strategic necessities. For many owners, it’s no longer just about compliance — it’s about future-proofing assets and unlocking long-term value.
Scaling to meet demand
At IV Produkt, we’re preparing for this wave of transformation. That’s why we are expanding our production facilities by 5,000 square metres, pushing our capacity beyond SEK 3 billion. By 2024, our turnover had already reached SEK 1.8 billion, bringing us closer to our 2026 goal of SEK 2 billion. We’re seeing sustained demand, not just
from new builds, but from energy renovations in existing properties — particularly in the UK, Scandinavia, Germany and Benelux. Our flexible Envistar range with integrated defrosting-free reversible heat pumps and our IV Produkt Cloud platform, is designed to meet these needs with innovation, efficiency and reliability.
The most valuable square metre in the building
The energy crisis of recent years taught us that resilience is rooted in efficiency. And in a world increasingly driven by climate targets, regulatory frameworks, and environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments, making smart, fast payback investments no longer optional — but essential. So next time you walk past your plant room, take a moment. Because what looks like just another piece of infrastructure might be the most valuable square metre in your entire building.
