EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Welcome to 2021!
W
hile the majority of last year was taken up with working out
ways to keep individuals, companies and jobs safe through lockdown, stepping into the new year feels a lot like opening a brand-new door.
Though the government has already had to turn it’s attention back to the previous “big issue” of Brexit, certain things seem to have gained a new perspective thanks to the pandemic.
Our industry is one of evolution and this issue is a testament to the strength and
optimism of the people and companies that make it up. January’s Focus feature is Heating and Ventilation, combining pieces of advice and opinion from some of the industry’s leading names; including Tom Murray, specification director at Baxi Heating, who looks at the opportunities ahead for the buildings services industry in decarbonising heat and examines the evolution of the boiler to meet the requirements of immediate and future heating solutions. Our Environmental Awareness feature this month looks at the importance of the construction
industry’s role in the shift towards net zero carbon. The production of building materials contributes 11% of the world’s total carbon emissions, with steel and concrete often the biggest culprits and, in the UK, the built environment currently contributes up to 40% of the UK's carbon footprint. And in his monthly column, Terry Sharp, President of the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA), stresses that “business must go on” and discusses the planned overhaul of the Government’s Energy Technology List.
