EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Net Zero drive intensifies into 2024
T
hroughout 2023, the drive to Net Zero has gained momentum and will continue to do so in the New Year and going forwards. Despite the Government softening its approach to decarbonisation, the industry has worked hard to innovate to help meet 2050 carbon neutral goals. Along with other events, our own Building Services Forum, this year focused on low carbon heating solutions which will be crucial to slashing emissions. Much of this innovation is driven by The Net Zero by 2050 ambition and this has pushed the concept of whole life carbon to the forefront.
This is the carbon emitted by a building over its
entire lifecycle including its operational carbon and its embodied carbon. With buildings accounting for a significant percentage of emissions in the UK, it’s now more
important that ever that we are able to find new and innovative ways to reduce the detrimental impact our commercial buildings are having on the planet. Some experts are keen to stress that one solution might be in re-use and retrofitting buildings rather than demolishing and rebuilding. They argue this could be a good way to keep embodied carbon to a minimum as long as operational carbon (other building services) is addressed simultaneously to keep an important efficiency balance.
The 2023 buzz phrases of Net Zero, retrofit and whole life carbon are a focus of our Environmental Awareness features starting on pg 14.
