How innovation from Light Science Technology is helping greenhouse

growers create the ideal light recipe Plants need light to grow and horticulture technology specialist, Light Science Technologies (LST), have been leading the way in technology to deliver the right light to commercial growers.

o meet rising food demands, there has been significant investment in technology that can help boost commercial greenhouse growth, whilst also reducing operational costs. As a result, an area of significant interest and development is that of light. Recent developments have been made into more intelligent lighting technology, helping commercial greenhouses to grow bigger and better crops.

T

One of the leading innovations has been UK- based Light Science Technologies’ NuturGROW lighting system which provides the crops with the ideal spectrum of LED light.

Providing the ideal light

recipe for plants With standard LED lighting providing a ‘one size fits all’ wavelength of light, greenhouse plants are often grown under conditions that are far from optimised. Launched in 2020, the patent pending NuturGROW LED lighting range was designed to instead deliver the ideal recipe of light.

As a result, Light Science Technologies have designed lighting that can be easily adapted to diverse structures, environments or crops. Through their innovation, Light Science

Technologies have been helping commercial growers benefit from lighting that is tailored to optimise their crop’s growing conditions. The NuturGROW system can deliver varying light spectrums, allowing a variety of crops to be successfully cultivated such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and strawberries.

Commercial growers installing the innovative NuturGROW lights have seen many benefits, these include…

Maximised crop yields With a rising population increasing the demand for food and nutrients, the world’s farmers are faced with the pressure of growing bigger crops with less resources and minimal room for error. By shining the ideal recipe of light that best promotes healthy crop growth, the NuturGROW has been helping more commercial growers increase their crop yields and ensure production meets the demands of a rising population. In some circumstances, yields have risen by greater than 21 per cent from improved lighting alone.

Reduced costs

When growing on a large commercial scale, overusing lighting can significantly increase energy expenditure and lower a harvest’s return- on-investment.

Using data gathered in their purpose-built laboratory, Light Science Technologies’ in-house team of scientists have helped identify the right spectral waveforms for specific crops through rigorous testing.

The NuturGROW ensures that energy is only consumed to create the correct intensity of lighting. As well as this, its electronics function is more cost-effective than industry competitors, with a more efficient micromole per Joule (µmol/J) of 3.30.

The modular design of NuturGROW, with its variable fitting lengths, also ensures that lights are only fitted within the growing zone, minimising energy waste even further.

Since the NuturGROW’s release, Light Science Technologies has been regularly expanding into new foreign distribution markets, such as South Africa, as more commercial growers see the value from delivering the ideal recipe of light. Light Science Technologies invites greenhouse growers to discover how they can achieve smarter and more efficient growth, today.

Improved sustainability The NuturGROW’s system is made from mostly recyclable materials, with greater than 90 percent of the components being reusable, allowing growers to seamlessly upgrade their lights with minimal downtime and impact on the environment.

Improve growing conditions

with Light Science Technologies Founded in 2019, Light Science Technologies have helped enhance growing conditions with innovative lighting and sensors that are used within commercial glasshouses, polytunnels and vertical farming.
