As we put the finishing touches

on the May issue, the sunshine has arrived in full force, turning our office into one of the warmest workspaces around. Armed with fans, plenty of iced drinks and a determination to keep cool, we’re excited to present the May issue of Electrical Engineering Magazine. Within this issue, we have been

Casey Porter Editor, Electrical Engineering Magazine

looking firmly at AI in the workplace as well as the advancements in Data Centres across the country, neither topic particularly new to us now, but both as relevant as ever. For our AI feature this month we look to EMS to demonstrate how we can use the next generation of AI powered excoskeletons. An incredible initiative that lends an alternative aid to support workers with “spinal cord injuries and gait disorders through adjustable, personalised assistance”. (P.32) For our Data Centres feature, we look to CloudFirst Global to discuss how we can develop outdated infrastructure to promote efficiency and prevent ageing hardware from impacting operations.(P.18) Both important infrastructures that can define the future of Engineering. Additionally, the last two months have seen a huge amount of exposure on health and safety in Electrical Engineering, more specifically, workwear, and I have had the opportunity to discover up and coming innovations in the space. Last month we attended The Health and Safety Event, where we spoke to key brands in PPE and workwear. The most frequent conversation I had was on Arc Flash protection, with companies such as Portwest and Mascot Workwear. The developments are integral to the safety of Electrical Engineers, too often we see workers refuse to wear PPE as a result of discomfort, combatting this is the key to developing workplace safety and efficiency. I saw this addressed, again, during the online press briefing for Carhartt’s new women’s workwear range.

The session offered an interesting look into how manufacturers are responding to the growing demand for properly designed, fit-for-purpose PPE and workwear for women across traditionally male-dominated industries. It was encouraging to see a major brand recognising the importance of functionality, comfort and durability without compromise, a conversation that feels increasingly relevant across engineering, construction and industrial environments. With this heatwave in full swing, we have been beginning to look towards the start of the Great British Summer and the June issue that will be coming along with it.
