• • • ADVERTORIAL • • • Take, for instance, the MQT8 series from Matsuo Electric, available from

ATC Semitec. Housed in sealed, low-profile IP64 cases, this unique twin-bimetal design allows very accurate control and can be set with tolerances as small as ±1.5°C and temperature differentials as little as 3°C once reserved for electronic systems. With mechanical life span reaching up to one million cycles (with minimal calibration drift), they offer reliability, stability and extended life for high-stake applications such as anti-condensation or frost protection in remote installations, including CCTV cameras or outdoor signage, especially where maintenance access is limited.

Safety above all When consumer and product safety is paramount, thermal cut-outs and one-shot fuses become crucial. These offer the final defence in circuits where overheating can result in equipment damage, fire, or injury. Non-auto resettable thermal fuses such as the Asahi US-603 or PEPI J(S) integrate secondary bimetal elements or heaters respectively to delay or prevent automatic resetting. This ensures that the fault condition can be assessed and resolved before power can be restored, a critical feature in consumer products and public-facing appliances or installations. For environments that experience extreme heat, the PEPI H range offers a

more reliable alternative to traditional pellet fuses. These one-shot bimetal fuses maintain integrity at temperatures exceeding 200°C and resist ‘nuisance trips’ caused by brief but non-dangerous heat spikes. With performance in accordance with IEC 60691 standards, they’re ideal for tightly regulated sectors such as the personal care, medical device or food equipment market.

Today’s applications Bimetal devices are quietly at work across virtually every sector. In automotive design, they provide thermal protection in seat heaters,

battery packs and electronic modules. In telecommunications, they safeguard equipment in base stations from thermal runaway. In renewable energy, bimetal controls protect inverters and battery enclosures from overheating without adding to the system’s power draw. Even in the emerging world of wearables, rechargeable batteries and premium personal care products, where space is at a premium, these miniature bimetal components provide an added layer of thermal safety. Their proven reliability makes them a go-to option for design engineers who are required to improve performance within smaller products but can’t afford failures in the field.

Partnering for success ATC Semitec, with over 30 years’ technical experience, recognise that thermal control isn’t a one-size-fits-all challenge. That’s why we work closely with engineers, designers and procurement teams to select and tailor thermal protection devices which meet their precise technical and commercial requirements. From prototyping to volume production, our support ensures that your thermal control system is as efficient, safe and cost-effective as possible. So, whether you’re designing the next generation of sustainable heating systems, medical device or consumer appliance, our range of disc thermostats, snap-action switches, adjustable cut-outs and thermal fuses offer time-tested performance backed by technical expertise. These products form just a part of the extensive range of NTC thermistors, RTDs, temperature sensors and thermal controls from ATC Semitec.

Smart simplicity In a world obsessed with smart technology, it’s easy to undervalue simple mechanical solutions. But in many applications, bimetal devices aren’t just relevant, they’re the optimal choice. They deliver rugged performance, intrinsic safety and long-term reliability, often with fewer components and less cost than digital alternatives. So, when you’re designing your next thermal control system, consider

going back to basics. You might just find that yesterday’s tech offers exactly what tomorrow needs.
