CABLING & CABLE MANAGEMENT
Safety is a choice: Think safe, act safe W

orking with electrical power brings obvious hazards for which there are many robust procedures in place to help electricians, contractors, linesmen safely through each day and back to their families. Unfortunately, accidents still happen in the industry bringing injury or worse to those who ignore the correct procedures. Klauke have helped to address this by developing the world’s first VDE insulated battery powered cable crimping and cutting tools, providing a 1000V protection from electric shocks – Klauke Orange line. The compact battery driven hydraulic tools of the Orange line have a Tri-Insulation barrier to improve safety and add an additional layer of protection to existing procedures.
The 3 levels of safety come in the form of: • A special design of hydraulic pump which maintains a physical gap of 12.5mm between any conducting parts which eliminates the risk of a voltage flash by maintaining the creepage distance. • Dielectric oil which has insulating properties to ensure no voltage can pass through or be conducted within the hydraulic system. • A robust and non-conductive Orange outer tool housing which prevents any accidental electrical flashovers. The combination of the Tri-Insulation barrier results in the tools being able to withstand the rigorous VDE insulation testing at 10,000V, before being marked as
safe for working at 1,000V along with the VDE internationally recognised stamp of authority. That means a x10 fold over-testing is performed on each and every tool manufactured, individually certified to ensure the safety of the user. Looking at Industry Body reports on Electrical accidents, such as the BG ETEM in Germany, the statistics show us that the main cause of injury is a result of people’s ignorance of the safety rules. This could be down to lack of training, or lack of recent refresher training, over familiarity of the job to be done or rushing the job due to limited available time. How many times have we heard the phrases “It’ll be alright, I’ve done this loads of times like this”, or “We shouldn’t do this, but it’ll be much quicker”?
Sometimes a line or cable which is perceived to be dead is not. When cut, this can have very serious results and unfortunately does happen. That is the nature of accidents. Fatigue can also play its part as tiredness leads to short-cuts and this is when errors in judgement can be made. Many roles of electricians and power utility operatives are heavily physical, and some manual tools can be energy sapping. This is a major contributor to electricians’ hand/ arm/ back and muscle injuries which lead to increased amounts of sick leave.
The Orange line provides that extra layer of protection when some of the examples above
happen. The last line of defence against electric shock when procedure is broken is the tool in your hand contacting the cable. With the Orange line in your hand, you can be assured of extra safety, providing the protection you need, when you need it. You may think that such a safety related tool will cost significantly more than a standard non- insulated tool, but you would be wrong. The Orange line has been priced more or less at the same rate as standard tools, meaning that the improved safety status can be adopted without too much consideration. There is a comprehensive range of Orange line tools available which can crimp up to 300mm2 cables and cut single core diameters of up to 50mm. Being a battery-operated tool also means the user input is reduced, therefore reducing fatigue on the job whilst improving accuracy.
It only takes a minute to make a mistake which could have long lasting effects – something the Klauke design team have strived to help eliminate. Emerson, the parent company of Klauke have seven core values, one of which is ‘Safety and Quality’ which states, ‘We are unwavering in our commitment to the highest standards of Safety and Quality for ourselves and our customers’. Klauke Orange is one such development which will add safety and make a difference to the industry.
