Synthetic and very robust materials (e.g. the EXTRAGUARD upper material from the GORE-TEX) brand can be hosed down with a pressure washer without damaging the material.
Durability Safety boots are also important pieces of equipment and have to withstand high mechanical stress, abrasion and deformation. Boots that wear out quickly offer less foot stability and, therefore, also less protection. Factors to consider also include: using materials
that do not deteriorate rapidly, that don’t produce cracks, as well as seams that can hold up under pressure. Robustness is important both in terms of economics and ecology. Years of wear saves on costs in the long term and provides added sustainability.
Sustainability The sustainability of safety boots is essentially determined by two factors: the environmental impact of their manufacture and the length of their service life. 80 per cent of the carbon footprint of safety
boots are generated during the production process. Durability is, therefore, the central lever for a better life cycle assessment. When boots are worn for twice as long, the one-off emissions associated with their manufacture are distributed over a longer life span and, in purely mathematical
terms, the annual environmental impact is reduced by roughly 50 per cent. Added sustainability also means years of wear,
proper care and maintenance when needed, instead of a fast replacement within a short period
of time. Durability, repairability and easy care are, therefore, highly relevant quality features both in terms of economics and ecology.”
