Orthoptists are healthcare professionals expert in diagnosing and treating defects in eye movement and problems with how the eyes work together, called binocular vision. All orthoptists have a degree in orthoptics, giving them a substantial core body of knowledge and expertise. They are one of 15 professions regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). In the UK, the majority work in eye clinics in NHS hospitals, others in community clinics, specialist centres for children with disabilities, or carrying out vision screening in schools. Orthoptists also assess patients in hospital, for instance on neuro-rehabilitation and stroke wards.
