A

t Capita, we recognise that we’re a big organisation with lots of moving parts. While that can seem daunting, the breadth of

work we do means we have a lot to offer young people – those still unsure about their futures and wanting to explore their interests further, and those with the determination to lead or succeed in their chosen career path.

Helping people is what drives us. Our purpose, “We create better outcomes”, means we want to ensure our clients, customers, and everyone they affect, are better off because of the work we do. Whether it’s improving conditions for local communities, or supporting the government with national projects, we’re at our best when we know we’re making a positive difference. Capita is transforming – evaluating what we do and how we do it, determined to make ourselves a better company that people can depend on. Traditionally, large corporations asked young people in their workforce to mould themselves to become what they need them to be. But in a rapidly changing world, one which future generations will be the leaders of, this has to change. That change involves listening, and appreciating the fresh perspectives that young people can bring. Recognising where we can and should be making improvements to become the employer they need us to be.

How our Youth Council are shaping a better Capita The Youth Council is a 10-person strong collective of young people aged 16-26, five current Capita employees, and five from outside the business. Special career qualifications or experience weren’t a factor when choosing our members. Instead, it was the passion and commitment to offer up ideas and play a part in transforming our business that mattered the most. The Youth Council is only in its first year, but

is already offering a platform for young people to engage with senior business leaders, driving change with the added benefit of gaining the skills and confidence needed to advance their careers. Some of the projects they’ve been involved in include:  How Capita can better approach working with new clients and taking on new contracts, ensuring the work we do positively impacts future generations.

 Speaking to our pensions businesses about how young people understand pensions, and what matters most to them when managing their finances.

 Our Black Lives Matter campaign.  Helping our partners, The Youth Group, connect young people to career mentors.

young talent within Capita. “Over the last year it’s been amazing to see the kind of talent Capita already has in its ranks,” he says. “Young people who I can see already have the skills, ideas and enthusiasm to become future leaders in the business.” James is feeling the personal benefits: “I’m near the end of my time with the Youth Council but I feel I’ve come a long way in developing my leadership skills, my ability to organise and plan events, and communicate effectively in a team to achieve great results.” The Youth Council is now hard at work on a new initiative: ‘Learn from a Leader’, a series of careers talks with Capita’s executive committee, including CEO Jon Lewis, to bridge the gap and lead helpful discussions about how to be successful in the professional world. 
