Feature 1 | SUPPORT VESSELS Subsea support act

Oceaneering’s latest OSV can undertake tasks related to subsea maintenance, repair and decommissioning, plus well stimulation and light well intervention services

enable the vessel to hold its position in extreme weather conditions, and the DP system is complemented by two tunnel thrusters, a drop-down thruster in the bow plus two Azipull thrusters in the stern. Oceaneering comments: “[The

propellers] on the propulsion systems can be turned 360° and were designed to optimise dynamic positioning of the vessel. Te vessel achieved an ERN station- keeping reliability rating of 99.99.99.99 which is the highest rating possible.” Ocean Evolution is powered by five

ceaneering International has taken delivery of a new subsea construction support

vessel, Ocean Evolution. Mike Ellis, VP for subsea projects, says that the newbuild will enable the group to beef up its range of “integrated services” in deepwater environments. Built domestically by BAE Systems,

to comply with the US’ Jones Act, and to the specifications of Marin Teknikk’s MT 6022 ship design, the 107.6m-long vessel is scheduled to commence operations in June this year. Oceaneering states that the vessel will be utilised to offer installation services for subsea tie-backs and to engage in work related to subsea maintenance, repair and decommissioning, in addition to providing well stimulation and light well intervention services.

ROV duo Ocean Evolution’s open steel deck spans some 1,170m2 of area and has been strengthened to handle 10tonnes per m2, with a top deck load capacity of 2,200tonnes. The ship can accommodate up to

110 members of personnel and features under-deck tankage for 412m3 of special products. Her 22.2m helideck, meanwhile, can handle helicopter loads of up to 13.2tonnes, enabling

the landing of Sikorsky S-92 and S-61N models. The vessel’s design also incorporates a 7m × 7m moon pool. Additionally, the vessel is equipped

for subsea surveys, having been fitted with a pair of Oceaneering’s in-house- developed, work-class ROVs – each of these being rated for depths of 4,000m and incorporating subsea tooling. These ROVs comprise: a 10.8m × 5.5m Millennium Plus unit, rated 164kW; and a 10.9m × 5.6m Nexxus unit, rated 186.4kW. Each ROV comes with its own active heave-compensated (AHC) launch and recovery system, installed in a custom indoor hangar permitting port and starboard launch. Other critical equipment includes an

AHC crane, which is rated 250tonnes at 10m and features a maximum hook height of 36m above the main deck. This is complemented by: a 40tonne SWL auxiliary crane, located adjacent to the moon pool, which can descend to depths of 180m; a 1.5tonne provisioning crane; and two ROV cranes, rated 1.1tonnes and 1tonne.

DP2 system Station-keeping has been enabled by the inclusion of a Kongsberg K-Pos22 dynamic positioning system, awarded DP2 status by classification society ABS. The latter feature is intended to

EPA Tier 4-compliant engines, each generating 3,190kW. Consequently, the vessel is capable of operating at 13knots with a mean draught of 5m. Siemens has provided the vessel’s integrated alarm system and power management system. OMT
