In the outdoors children can engage in a range of physical activities that are essential for growth and development as well as mental and physical health. Children can climb and scramble, balance and swing, throw, roll, catch and run. They will develop skills in using both large and small equipment, learn to negotiate space and develop their core strength.
Children will learn about their own bodies and its capabilities as well as concepts relating to force, motion, direction and speed through physical play. They will develop co-operative skills as they engage in activities with peers.
Physical play can provide opportunities for children to develop their self- esteem as they challenge themselves and master new skills. In addition, children are learning about risk taking, risk management, how to recognise hazards and how to keep themselves and others around them safe.
