CLITHEROE Concerts Society's 60th Season goes continues to sparkle like a diamond.
Its fifth concert featured the Duo
Teresa Carreno, with pianist Ana Laura Manero and cellist Arturo Serna. Hailing from from Venezuela, they completed their musical studies in England and so
It was no surprise that they chose a programme of both European and South American composers. The concert opened
with Tchaikovsk/s Pezzo Capriccioso which is short and quite serious, written after the death of a friend. This was followed by the Cello Sonata by Sergei Rachmaninov, a major piece of music in four movements, written in 1901. This was linked with the first piece because both were dedicated to the cellist Anatoly! Brandukov, who gave their first performances. This was a stunning first half
of the concert with prolonged applause and reflected the Duo's meticulous care in preparation both of the music and the sound to give the perfect balance between the instruments. After the gnpping intensity
of the Rachmaninov, many in the audience might have thought that a second half of South American music would bring a different mood. It did, but the emotional grip of the music continued. "Oblivion" by Astor Piazolla is a beautiful piece of music, written for a chamber ensemble. Despite this. It is true to the spirit of the tango, speaking elegantly through the music of love and sadness. This was mirrored

in feeling by another tango , by Piazolla, "Adios Nonino",
written in memoiy of his father. Piazolla was followed by Villa Lobos: his six-movement "Pequena Suite", written in

1913. Although Villa Lobos had recently returned from
collecting folk music in some - of the wilder parts of Brazil, the music Is not obviously influenced by this. The fourth work was more
substantial, Pampeana No.2 by Alberto Cinastera, written as recently as 1950. Ginastera is one of the most irnportant South Amencan composers
of the 20th Century and this work argues well for him. The composer described it as "without using any folkloric material, it recalls rhythms and melodic trends of the Argentinean pampas". The Duo Teresa Carreno are passionate advocates of its merits. The final work on the
programme was the well known and much loved "Le Grand Tango", again by Piazzolla - a wonderful way to end a wonderful concert. The applause was enthusiastic and after a number of curtain calls. Ana and Arturo were pleased to play a little more music. The rapport between themselves and the audience was strong. Everybody wanted to thank them, ask them questions, congratulate them on their playing and buy one of their CDs! The Society's final concert of
. the season will be on March 28th with Martin Roscoe and this is already a sellout. There is a waiting list in case any tickets are returned. Looking ahead a little further, Anthony Hewitt will be playing in Clitheroe on May 18th during his epic chanty cycle ride from Lands End to John o' Groats. This concert is in conj'unction with The Grand and tickets (only £10) are available from either source. On June 8th the Concerts
Society has Amy Perry and Martin Bickerton, the Astrum Guitar Duo, playing at the Council Chamber on Church Street. This summer music and brief ACM will be a donation concert and is the ideal occasion to find out more about the Concerst Society and to introduce fnends and family. ■

Seven stone loss has

CLITHEROE slimming club member Emma Seaward had an obvious goal when embarking on her weight-loss programme, but the unexpected benefits of losing more than seven stone have been a.welcome bonus and the knock-on effects have been truly life changing. Emma (30), a home-carer and till assistant at
the town's Homebase store, explained how her weight loss has made an immediate impact on everyday living "It feels as though my life has changed
completely. I'm so much more active and confident and I got a j'ob in a shop, which I never would have done before because my self-esteem was so low due to the way I felt about how I looked," she said. 1 love spending time with my godson and
now we are able to play so many games together and, in the nice weather, even go roller-blading! I ve also taken up ice skating, which I
absolutely love, and I've even managed to climb Pendle Hill, which in all the years of living in Clitheroe I had never yet managed to do." Away from all Emma's new found activities, the
day-to-day things we all take for granted have taken on a new thrill, down to buying clothes and enjoying shopping. "It's such'a fantastic feeling to be able to
go into a shop and know that I can look at all the racks and the full range of clothes vvithout worrying that they won't have my size. I didn't realise there were so many lovely clothes out there!" she said. "I can wear heeled shoes, too, which sounds like such a small thing, but to me it's such a treat

health issues, including diabetes and heart problems, as giving her the motivation to completely change her diet and enjoy a new much healthier lifestyle. "I chose to join my local WeightWatchers
group and the plan just feels like a totally different way of life as opposed to just a diet plan," said Emma.
"I now cook meals from scratch, eating lots of
healthier foods and loads of fruit and vegetables. I used to eat mainly processed and frozen foods, usually-anything that was quick and easy to microwave, but now I'm taking the rime to prepare my food and enjoy cooking and learning new recipes. "I'm no angel though and enjoy the odd
takeaway here and there, but it's great as my eating plan allows me to do this and still maintain overall healthy living." As Emma now knows, the key to a total life
change is all about a positive attitude and a will to really seize life's opportunities, along with, of course, a little inspiration and help from others to make the leap of faith and change unhealthy habits once and for all. Emma continued: "Karen Shepherd, who runs
the St James's WeightWatchers group, is an inspiration to all of us who attend the meetings. "I've been to dieticians in the past who have
failed to motivate or inspire me, but Karen's own journey still continues to do so. "Karen doesn't judge us because she herself
has been in the same position as we all are, but I could never have achieved all of this without her. "When I've gone through hard times along the

for concern that kickstarted her healthier eating regime, and she cites a long family history of
way, I've spoken to Karen and other members of the group and it really helped to put things into perspective. "I can now continue with my own personal
plan and attend meetings regularly, safe in the knowledge that I have changed my life for the better and can enjoy the foods I love without gaining weight."
