BRITISH motorists taking their cars across to the Continent should be


aware of how widely the cost of a breakdown


can vary across European countries. A survey by Green Flag Motoring Assis­


tance looked at the different charges levied by breakdown recovery firms. Austria came out top with an average charge of £74, fol­ lowed by Ireland and Germany at £67 and Italy at £64. Spain was the cheapest at £37. The distance that these initial call-out


charges covered also varied. In the Nether­ lands garages operated a 25km radius, but the Germans allowed only 6km before the motorist was liable for additional distance supplement - as much as the £1.34 per kilo­ metre average charged in Ireland. Green Flag quotes the example of a


motorist breaking down in Berlin and need­ ing to have his or her vehicle recovered to Birmingham. The overall cost of this could be as much as £1,098. The upshot of all this is that Green Flag is


advising all motorists going across to Europe to take all reasonable precautions to ensure that they do not break down. Get your car serviced before setting off and remember the distances involved - from Leeds to Bor­ deaux is 1,600 miles, so you can appreciate how important it is to undertake the trip in a car that is up to it.

to foster feelings of inferiority for too long. From a business user’s per­ spective, this car makes a good deal of sense. First and foremost it is a very


practical proposition. Excellent fuel economy, low emissions and tried and tested mechanicals add up to a good start. Factor in the guaranteed residuals


that the Jaguar badge ensures, the burgeoning market for premium executive estates and the sheer ver­ satility of this body style and you have an aspirational model that is surprisingly attainable. Let me start with pricing. You will


not need to be “earmarked for the board” to find the X-TYPE Estate within your company car budget.


The Classic trim level retails at just under the psychologically important £20,000 barrier. Mention this to your fleet manager and maybe then you can s ta r t thinking about options. If he is a little more accommodat­
