needed to be be of thicker, higher grade marine ply wood and that as the users knew what was required for the design and specifica tions, they could have input into the maintenance deci sions. He said: "The users feel ignored and the skatepark is neglected. Also they feel there is no-one they can speak to about what is happening, what is needed and what help they

can give." He said that 25 or more

youngsters used the skatepark every day and

that this was the sort of use of the Castle grounds that should be maintained to

prevent misuse. To illus trate how popular the park is he said that this week a group of skaters had twice travelled by bus from Lon- gridge specifically to use it. He said that it was always busy in the evenings and provided an unrivalled atmosphere for young peo

ple. Mr Procter said: "In an

ideal world there's a full time job there just supervis ing the skatepark, but we have not got the resources, which is a shame. The skatepark is a valuable

Speaking for the Ribble '

Valley Borough Council, which is responsible for the maintenance of

the

skatepark, borough engi neer Mr Graham Jagger is annoyed by Mr Pro cte rs response. He said that he is very satisfied with the stan dards of maintenance, but there is a difficulty, main taining the profile of the boarding and trimming it to ensure there are ho lips. He said: "As far as com

municating with the council regarding the skatepark goes, users shduld speak to Mr Proctor in1 his capacity

as a youth leader, who can then represent them to the council directly." Mr Jagger said that he

had written to Mr Procter a t Trinity, but had not received a reply and was unhappy about him speak ing out when he had not been in touch with the coun cil about the skatepark. He said: "I have no doubt

the damage is being done by vandalism. Boards that were replaced only last week

have been tom up." To help with the supervi

sion a t the park funding from the crime and disorder budget from,Lancashire

County Council has now been made available. This will allow the employment of two young adults from next month to act as peer education workers. They will help the skatepark users and other young people to adopt a positive attitude towards the skatepark and the Castle grounds. They will also liaise with the bor ough council about mainte nance, skatepark park use and represent the young park users in general.
