Honour for man who will lead
veteran charity
A PROMINENT local personality; has been
elected president of one of Britain's oldest char
ities. '•Mr Miles Fox is now at
the helm of the Broughton Catholic Charitable Society,
of which he ,has been a member for nearly 50 years. Mr Fox, a parishioner at
St Michael and St John's RC Church, Clitheroe, is managing director of the Salthill-based haulage firm he founded 35 years ago. It employs about 30 people, including Mr and Mrs Fox's two sons. The charity was founded
in 1787 following a disas trous smallpox epidemic in the Broughton area north of Preston. Families would have been destitute but for the charity's work. But now it helps anyone worldwide on appropriate recommen dation, although member ship is limited to Roman Catholics resident or born in the county, or of Lan cashire parentage. The soci ety works on the "old", pre reorganisation boundaries, and its chairman is Fr Peter Birmingham, of Sabden. One of Mr Fox's first

WHAT a lovely weekend - the Great Days Festival was up to its
usual high standard.' -• The concerts-were all .so varied; we
were entertained by local musicians and musicians from afar who were all so good - as good as any you can see on the tele vision, but these are live. We laughed and laughed at the comic antics of the Old- Rope String Band and the jokes and sto •ries of Bernard Wrigley.

dent. Malcolm Barnes (22),
of Tower Hill, Chtheroe, pleaded guilty in court; at Blackburn to a breach of the peace and was bound
over in the sum of £100 to keep the peace for a year. A charge of being drunk and disorderly was with
drawn. The court heard that the
incident happened when some men and women were seen shouting at a police officer. Barnes refused to be quiet and was arrested. Mr Stephen Parker
(defending) said his client had been, allowed home from his duties to visit his girl friend, who had given birth to their child. "According to other peo
ple in the group, he was per haps unfortunate to be arrested," said Mr Parker. His client had been m cus tody all weekend and com ing home had been a waste
