Former Blue off in pulsating derby
Clilheroe ....................2 Great Harwood........... 1 A GOAL 13 minutes from time by loan man N e i l
I Spencer clinched victory | for Clitheroe at home to Great Harwood. In a blood and thunder
derby encounter Harwood’s Neil Otley was given his marching orders for striking out at Carl Greenwood mid way through the second
half. Five names also went into
the referee’s notebook as the game threatened to run out of control at times. Former Blues manager
Denis Underwood, now at the helm at Harwood, looked to have outfoxed his old club when the Show- grounders took the lead against the run of play a minute before half-time. However, Steve Parry’s
men turned the match around thanks to fine sec ond half strikes from Paul Whalley and Spencer to deservedly take the three
points. The match began at a
helter-skelter pace with both sides struggling to get
| their foot on the ball in the face of some strong tackles. It was Clitheroe who were
| first to set tle into their stride but with Harwood fighting hard, clear- cut' chances were few and far between.
____ _ Darren Norman fizzed a
| shot wide of the post in the seventh minute after being put clear on the right by
Carl Greenwood. Spencer had a great
chance on 22 minutes but shot high and wide after being released-,by Andy | Coivking.
• £ ,3 . ^ The Blues continued to
play the more intricate passing game but suc cumbed to a sucker punch a minute before the interval. Graeme Lightbown
worked well down the left and delivered the perfect cross to Martin Aspinall whose header left Kris Richens, in the Clitheroe
goal, helpless. The Blues came out for
the second half firing on all cylinders and equalised
almost immediately. A free kick on the right
was delivered with precision by Darren Norman to Paul Whalley whose glancing header found the bottom corner. Spencer nearly put the
Blues ahead on 55 minutes when his smart turn and shot from 25 yards flashed just over the bar. Once the visitors were
reduced to 10 men, 10 min utes later, Clitheroe pro ceeded to make their extra man count. However, it wasn’t until
the 77th minute before the home side got the all-impor
tant winning goal. The tricky Steve Denny
worked wonders down the right wing and his far post cross was met by the tower ing head of Spencer who notched his second goal for the club. Dennis Hill had a great
chance to increase Clitheroe’s lead in the final minute but his run and shot was well saved by John
Morrey. In the end the final result
was just reward for Clitheroe who sent the vast majority of the 505 atten dance home happy.

I and second teamers but for the opening few moments it seemed as if the massive visiting pack would dominate, allowing a speedy set of three-quarters to attack
I at will. The Clitheroe spirit soon made its
presence felt. Ian Fielding collected a short pass
from Malcolm Heanan and sliced his way through the Vale defence to score the first try of the afternoon.
Heanan then added the extra two
points, but the home side lead was short -lived as Vale then notched two good converted tries to lead 14-7. With half-time approaching,
Clitheroe staged another attack, Field ing combining with centre partner Dave Davenport to send Brian Wood side stepping in at the corner to make it 14- 12 at the break. The Yuletide excesses were now begin
ning to take their effect on the Vale pack, and the Clitheroe eight regularly
knocked the stuffing out of them. First Alan Nuttall put the Maroon
and Golds into the lead as the forwards drove over from close range, Heanan
converting. Then came the try of the match. A
Vale attack broke down within yards of
