chester Festival of Music and A r t , which s ta r ts tomorrow.

For while David Brandwood-

Spencer, of Penwortham, has taken on the task of administrat ing the 1997 event, his daughter, Sarah, a professional musician, is returning to Ribchester to play in the festival’s closing concert. •

The Brandwood-Spencers are

no strangers to the world pf entertainment; David and his wife, Marilyn, were members of Preston Musical Comedy Society for some 30 years. But David, a former adminis

trator with Blackburn Borough Council, acknowledges that it was through Sarah’s interest in the vio l in that he became involved with classical music

events. He served as chairman of the

Lancashire Schools’ Symphony Orchestra for three years. Mean-1 while, Sarah went on to the

Royal Northern College of Music and is half way through a post graduate artist’s diploma at the C on se rv a to ire in T oronto, Canada.

David stepped in as festival

administrator, having “ got involved in the margins last year when I stage-managed for most of the festival and enjoyed it.”

He added: “ I t ’ s been an

extremely interesting and chal lenging experience.”

Sarah will perform with the Goldberg Chamber Orchestra in

the Grand Finale Concert, which features Russian violinist Lydia Mordkovitch and a programme of works by Haydn, Vaughan Wil liams, Holst and Schubert. She said: “ I always enjoy com

ing to Ribchester. The festival has such a lovely atmosphere and it’s a beautiful setting.” Sarah first appeared at the

festival in 1994 as a member of The Martel Ensemble and has played at the Ribble Valley event every year since then. 9 See “Lifestyle” for full fes

Euro boost for bus service

CASH from the European Regional Development

Fund will help maintain a key local bus service.

: :The'’summer. Bowland Pathfinder service plays an im p o r tan t r o le in encouraging tourists into the area, boosting the local economy and helping to protect the environment by providing an alterna tive to the car.

It is currently sponsored

by the county council and the Countryside Commis sion. Now a £3,500 grant from Europe ensures that the bus can run again next year, and extra promotion work should attract addi tional passengers.-
