HEAD SETS OUT EXAM F IG U R E S
A LOCAL independent school this week explained a discrepancy between two sets of figures relating to the school’s GCSE pass
rate. Mrs Ja n e t Harrison,
p r in cip al of Moorland School, Clitheroe, told p a re n ts a t the annual a w a r d s e v e n in g — reported in last week’s Avertiser and Times — th a t the pass ra te for pupils passing five GCSEs at A-C was 80 per cent. Meanwhile, our front
73 per cent in the official tables was due to the fact th a t all our 16-year-old pupils were counted by the DFEE even though some were in Year 10.
page story, setting out local schools’ positions in the official league tables, gave Moorland a 73 per
cent pass rate. Mrs Harrison said: “In
real terms our actual pass rate was 80 per cent. The
for a pupil to do an extra year in our senior school we do not worry about the league table. We give pri ority to the individual pupil and his/her GCSE qualifications. We prefer them to leave with several high grade GCSEs to their name by giving the extra help and encouragment a small school can provide.
“If we find it necessary CLITHEROE Dolphins prepare for their annual gala. (CAT5072)
with both sets of statistics. As stated in your headline, they were a credit to both pupils and staff.”
Sara just misses top shop award
A CLITHEROE clothes shop has narrowly missed out on winning a prestigious clothing industry award for the fouth time in five years. Sara’s, of King Street, has again been named
runner-up in the children’s wear retailer section in th is y ear ’s Drapers Record Independent Retailer and Department Store Award. Manager Sara Collinge said she was pleased
with the performance despite missing out on the top slot. She commented: “ It is brilliant. The
winner was a big store in London, so we did well with such tough competition.’’ She was presented with a finalist certificate
at the award ceremony at the Natural History Museum, London, which was hosted by top fashion designer and television personality Mr
Jeff Banks. There were more than 600 entries in the com
petition and Sara’s was one of only 60 stores to be shortlisted. Each finalists was visited by a panel of judges, which assessed all aspects of the business.

HE studs of Nottingham For est’s Colin Cooper denied Rovers the three points in the dying sec onds of their crucial basement clash on
Monday night at the City Ground. . A share of the spoils took Rovers to within
four points of Southampton — Saturday’s opponents — and the safety zone, but they could have been a lot closer but for Cooper’s
dramatic finish. But Rovers have now lost only two of their
last eight Premiership games and look like coming lojife at a crucial stage of the sea
son. In a tense first half, Rovers had the best
chance early on when Kevin Gallacher slipped in Tim Sherwood after a slack pass from Steve Chcltle, and Sherwood tried to instantly clip the ball over the oncoming Mark Crossley, only for the keeper to make a superb save, firmly tipping the ball over
the bar. But Forest took the lead on the stroke of
halMime when flying winger Chris Allen was needlessly brought down in the area by Jef f Kcnna, and Stuart Pearce sent Tim Flowers the wrong way from the spot. After the break it looked like the situation
claimed they would return the moulds a f te r using| them to carry out a repair to a machine. They loaded I the moulds on to the back of a green fiat-back Ford Transit van and drove off| at around 12-30 p.m. P o lic e h ave issued!

i was worsening for Rovers when Billy i McKinlay, already on a yellow card, was late i on Allen, but he luckily avoided a second, ! and Rovers recovered to take the lead with ; two quick strikes. j Firstly Gallachcr produced a piece of sub- | lime skill to flick the ball over Crossley from 1 Graeme Le Saux’s cross after a flowing ! move, and then Jason Wilcox slid in the \ rebound after Crossley failed to hold a sling- i ing 25 yarder from Gallacher. | Forest showed a lot of character to raise | their game, and they restricted Rovers to ij only one more chance, which if Chris Sutton \ had converted when one-on-one with Cross- \ ley, would have killed the game. | But Rovers’ goal lived a charmed life, and % Colin Hendry and Henning Berg in particu- I Jar were outstanding at the back. I Steve Blatherwick had a goal disallowed for handball from a corner on the hour, and Alf Inge Haalnnd had a header come back off the bar, before Braveheart Hendry some how bea t th re e Forest players to the rebound. Haaland saw another two excellent chances
come and go, while Pearce saw his header saved by Flowers at point blank range, and the follow-up from Allen was blocked by
Berg. It looked all over as Rovers ran down the
clock, but in injury time, Allen waltzed round Berg and cut the ball back for Kevin
Campbell. He sliced the ball in front of goal, but Coop
er reacted and stabbed the ball forward, only for Lc Saux to clear the ball from the
line. Cooper, on his back, responded and poked
the ball home with his studs with the last kick of the game to earn a deserved point.
win over Bournemouth a t T u r f Moor. And the Clarets have now lost just once in
T
their last nine games — and have the same number of points as they had at the same stage of the season they were promoted via the play-offs in 1993-94. That season though, Reading were running
away with the title, and significantly no-one has forged out in front this term. Burnley were promoted via the play-offs
after accounting for Plymouth Argyle in the semi-finals. The Pilgrims are Saturday’s opponents as
Burnley embark on their longest trip of the season. On this occasion they should be clear
favourites to win and take their excellent run into Tuesday’s home clash with promo tion rivals Wrexham. On Saturday Paul Barnes struck with a
looping header — his ninth goal of the sea son — from a David Eyres cross on six min utes and that proved to be the winner. Bournemouth came more into the game
after that, and it required good saves from Marlon Bercsford to deny Matt Holland and lyseden Christie, on loan from Coven
try. But Barnes should have made it 2-0 on the
stroke of half-time when he rounded Jimmy Glass, only to fire into the side-netting while off-balance. It was all Burnley after the break, but they
were unable to add to their lead, although the intimidating central defensive trio of Vince Overson, Peter Swan and Gerry Har rison kept things light at the other end. Walsall will be the Clarets’ second round
opponents in the FA Cup a week on Satur day, a f ter their 3-1 replay success over Northwich Victoria on Tuesday night. The Saddlers knocked the Clarets out of
the cup at Turf Moor in the first round last season.
