A NUTTY new neighbour moved into De Lacy Street, Clitheroe, last week, in the shape of an albino squirrel! T h e i n t r i g u i n g
appearance of the curious creature prompted fascin ated resident Mrs Hazel Carden to ring us at the “Advertiser and Times” to check out the white-haired mammal. Subsequent inquiries
revealed that the new resi dent may not actually be albino, as its appearance suggests, but an unusual breed of squirrel. The squirrel first made
its appearance last Thurs day when it made its home
in a hole in the wall at the front of a house in De Lacy Street. It scampered around the
street at will and looked q u ite at ease in its surroundings. Said Mr Tony Cooper,
who writes our “Nature Notes” column: “It sounds a very rare mammal, pos sibly somebody’s escaped pet. “Albinism is rather less conspicuous in mammals. If it is a native of this country, it sounds to have very strange behaviour patterns.”

Tools of the trade
“Give us the tools and we will finish the
job." said Sir Winston Churchill in a radio broadcast in February, 1941. He was talking about the war with Germany, but the statement still applies today in the war against the elements. Before any work
can be carried out, it is important you have the right tools for the job you are doing, and that they are safe to use. The last thing you
need is for a hammer-head to fly off and damage an area that was previously intact — or worse still, to hit someone on the head.

Starting at the top; Chimney pots should be secured against the high winds we have come to expect in East Lancashire. Not only would a falling chimney provide a headache for anyone it happened to land on, it would give a much bigger headache to the householder.

or broken slates will keep the elements out of your roof space and help to prevent costly internal repair work later. Gutterings should be cleared of blockages and make sure there are no cracks in your downspouts which will let water splash around your walls and foundations. While on the roof,

the ladder, take a look at your window frames. Cracked paintwork will let water into the wood. If that has already happened, you need to give some thought to replacement windows.
On your way down Rather than
replace like with like, why not give some thought to double glazed units. Traditional hardwood or modern PVC windows in white or wood effect are readily available.
Double glazing has
many advantages over single-glazed units: they keep out the cold and drafts; they prevent condensation; and they reduce the noise level from outside. Modern, well-designed and fitted units are virtually maintenance free and once fitted can be forgotten. Still on tne outside,

but worth-while exercise is to cover the mortar with mastic to protect it and your home. This prevents water getting between the inner and outer shells of your house, keeping internal walls dry.
Inside job
Moving inside the house, you need to look for the hidden things as much as the visible. How long is it since
your electrical wiring was replaced? Many old houses still have cables with rubber insulation, and that tends to go hard and crack with age.
Not only are you
risking spending nights in the dark with faulty wiring, you also risk your life and that of your family. A live wire shorting down the metal case of an appliance can cause shocks and fires, both of which are killers. If in doubt, call in an
electrician. Electrical repairs are not jobs for the amateur. Many internal jobs
can be undertaken by the DIY-minded householder. Painting and decorating, plastering, even plumbing is not out of bounds tor the more adventurous. Local hardware
