MY children have been affected, yet again, by the pollution from Castle Cement’s chimney, while playing in our yard — the works can be seen from our meadow. The children have to sleep with the windows all closed and 11 see no reason why this should continue.

Hogweed easily avoided

I WAS most interested to read the comments of your co r re sp o n d e n t , Jack Ripley, about the origins of pant hogweed in this

region. It is thought that giant hogweed was planted in country house gardens during Victorian times. This 1 find entirely credi ble and can easily visualise it as a spectacular and much-prized addition to a shrubbery. In those days, most, if not all, of the gar den work was done by a staff of gardeners and the main concession to sum mer heat would possibly have been disrobing as far as the waistcoast, so the blistering effect of giant

hogweed might well gone unnoticed.

planting like this, with the subsequent escape of seeds. Some of the earliest English records of giant hogweed come from the Preston and lower Ribble area and it is possible that this is the story of the original introduction to

this area. The.plant is now very

widespread in the British Isles, as well as in Scan dinavia, Northern Europe, North America and Can ada and in North Africa. It is highly likely that Col Parmeter did in fact pick up some seed during his travels and bring it back to Whitewell. In appearance, the

the hogweed dies back in winter, patches of bare soil are left, which are very vulnerable to erosion, especially when they occur on riverbanks. This is the main reason for the NRA’s involvement with hogweed control. The other factor is the way that the sap can sensitise skin to sunlight, so that some people can get severe blistering and permanent scarring. I must take issue with

investigating the amount of pollution with scientific monitoring, rather than relying on "the human nose,” which David Morris says is his way of detect ing levels of pollution, fol lowing complaints?

during the peak wedding season, Mrs Clews had to book a reception venue. Stonyhurst College, where Patrick was a pupil, Mr Clews a former head of maths and where Mrs Clews teaches speech and drama, proved the perfect solution. The old observa tory was booked and an

intimate reception held out-of-doors on one of the more beautiful days this

summer. The couple, who are to

live in Kuala Lampa, left- for a honeymoon to a secret destination. Mrs Clews, who will soon be helping to organ
