nf “will” it happen, but “when,” he believes. His professional duties,
which take him into “the field" fur at least 2a hum's a week, have imbued in him a sense of both won der and fait aeeompli. As countryside officer, Mr Hewitt Cl!)) is
responsible for the initiation and funding of a plethora nf Kibble Valley environmental projects — from the establishment of wildlife-enhancing pond areas to the simple planting of trees. He is also responsible
for Tree Preservation Orders, tree care, tree lore and tree planting: is a member of the1 Forest of Howland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Technical Committee; a grant consultant for the Forestry Commission; a member of both Salthill and Crossbill Nature Reserve management committees and has a close working relationship with both the Nature Conservancy Council and the Lancashire Trust for Nature Conservation! 11 is an awesome career
that started, 21 years agu, as an apprentice in the parks and gardens department of Sheffield City Council. His interest in country side matters and all things
"green,” however, began much earlier. As a young buy he recalls a bout of illness that left him bedridden for a while. His gracious older sister kindly kept him supplied with a constant flow of books from the local library, among them texts on natural history and the environment.

MOVE IT l COUNTRYSIDE ol l tcer David Hewitt at work in the Kibble Valley by Theresa Robson It proved the catalyst
fur a love of nature and the countryside that ulti mately brought him to
Blackburn, as the borough's countryside officer of 11 years' standing and, fur the past three years, to the Kibble
Valley. Mr Hewitt said that
working in the Kibble Valley is a sharp contrast to working in Blackburn. "The Kibble Valley is a lovely area," he said. "I only have to drive to a city and it reminds me of how luckv I am! In Blackburn I felt 1 was settling tree disputes all the time. Working in the Kibble Valley is far more positive — 250 square miles of beautiful countryside!" The environmental
projects undertaken by the Kibble Valley Council since Mr Hewitt's appointment include pond schemes at Basliall Haves and Bolton-b.v-Bmvland, dry stone walling at Sabden and Grindlctun and woodland management and habitat protection at St Leonard’s School. Lungho,
spearheaded by St Leonard's Seoul Croup. (wants for
environmental projects usually constitute up to •10'< of the total cost of the project, on average £750. Applicants ring Mr Hewitt with details of their project and have a preliminary chat, after which they submit an official application. The application will he
vetted for suitability to the landscape, the benefit of the project to the area — and the cost!
Mr Hewitt is also often
asked, by the council's planning department, to assess the environmental impact of planning applications and our photographer John Barry caught up with him in Wiltshire earlier this week doing just that. He added; “Human

ON the first Good Friday, God, in Jesus Christ, suf- fered the humiliation and indignity of that painful death by crucifixion. It was the ultimate mail-devised penalty for sin. Being sinless, Jesus did not die for His own sins, but for ours, taking the sinner’s place and punishment. It was baffling at first to those fear-stricken follow
ers that He, who had silent His time doing good and helping people, should he treated as an accursed one. Steeped in the ancient beliefs of their ancestors, they later saw Christ as a sin offering, the sacrificial lamb of God. The temple was awash with the blood of slain
beasts, because it was wrongly believed that God desired such sacrifices. To end such practices Jesus gave Himself to be the onee-aml-for-all sin offering for everyone. He died that we might be able to accept God’s forgiveness and he saved from the effects of our wrongdoing. God gave Himself in Jesus to save us from our silts.

sheer wonder of the resurrection came to the stricken disciples when Jesus appeared in their midst and they heard the familiar tones of His voice. From that day onwards they never knew when He would suddenly appear again. And when these visual visits had to cease, they began to sense His invisible presence and lived as if He were continually by their side and in constant contact. Practising the constant presence of Christ has con
