ENDUIIO bike racer Philip Smithson has started his campaign in the seven round British Championship with an impressive top

five finish. Competing in the Police experts’ class on a Suzuki,

the Clitherue man secured third place and fifth overall after two days of gruelling racing and special tests. Staged at Breekland Forest in Norfolk, the opening

round attracted over 270 of the country’s top riders all gunning for glory. Held over two days.the competitors had to negotiate a tough -17 mile circuit as well as the various special tests. On the Saturday, the weather started out damp, but

as they day went on it dried out, with the conditions superb. A f te r completing two laps of the sandy and bumpy circuit on the Saturday, t'hilip stood in third place overall and was well pleased with his

performance. "The bike went well and because the weather was so

good I could go more or less flat out over the circuit,” he said.

v Due to the British climate, the eastern coast events

are always a lot drier, with the conditions at Hreckland dry, fast and near perfect. On the Sunday, the course was reversed, with

Bleak day for rugby team

IT was a bleak day for tin* town’s rugby 17 as they

Thrilling match Marlick Ltd 2. Kimington 1

TH IS wits a th r illin g matcli with two teams, at <i]ip<>- site ends of the Hast Lancashire League first division table, pitched together as they font-lit out an excellent

cup tie. 'file final score came after

extra time and as the two weary sides left the pitch, it seemed a travesty ol justice that someone had to lose. Playing w it bout captain ( ia rv F a rn sw o r th ami the

inspirational David Mason. Kimington brought in H a r t

ley, and Michael 1* rankland for his first, game following a knee operation. Koth players wen* to have

an effect on the game, as it was H a r t le y who f ir e d Kimington in front from clo.-e

range. Franklaml's impact on the

match was as high, but in the opposite way as he limped ott

with a calf strain after hall an hour, and Kimington had to re -s h u f f le w i th Penman

switching to centre halt. To their credit. Kimington

held onto their lead, playing w ith gre a t purpose u n t i l around the hour mark, when a pass into the box appeared to strike Kriggs' hand, and a penalty was awarded. Karliek equalised through

this and set up a tremendous hour of football. Koth sides used the Hanks well. Kriggs overlapping as often as possi ble. and Penman pushed up front again with Hartley mov ing to centre half. Koth defences stood firm

and extra time resulted. After 10 m in u te s . Kr iggs went through from the right and thundered a shot against the underside of the bar ami down onto the goal line, hut unfor tu n a te ly for Kimington. a

defender was on hand to elear

the danger. With two minutes of the

first period of extra time lull. Ka rllck scored the winner with a far post header which would normally have been cut-off by the centre half. No blame could he attached a? everyone gave their all in a match in which both teams had been evenly matched for two hours. Kvery player played well,

with stand-in skipper Kraitli- w a i t e . a n d K r i g g s outstanding. K im in g to n : Tomlin son. Kriggs, Hodgson. K ra ith -
