BRIDGE CLUB

MEMBERS of ClithuniL* Bridge Cluh aUeiulod the final of the Cold Cup held last weekend in Harrogate. .Spectators were? w e lcom e and any re ad e r interested in following the game of bridge at top level and talking to players of international stan dard would find a visit to this, or a s im i la r e v e n t , most, rewarding. There was no charge for admission. Arriving 10 minutes before play began, I look a seat at a corner of the card table where l could watch the bidding and play of John Armstrong in the first, session and Tony For rester in the second. Before play began, Arm

strong briefly introduced the other players to the spectators, who then numbered about :»0. Some, like me, had chosen to sit where they hail a clear view of one player’s hand; others pre ferred to walk round and look at all four hands. Apart from Armstrong who,

at the beginning of each deal, obligingly fanned his cards widely and held them above his head so that the spectators behind could see, the players were oblivious to the presence of other people, even though some o f them were literally ! breathing down their necks. In fact, the most memorable impression of the event was the absolute concentration of the competitors. The final session was watched

on view-graph in an outside room. Four hands were dis played on a screen and the bid ding and play were discussed by two experts. All in all. it was a most absorbing experience for the bridge enthusiast. Wednesday's winners at the

Clitheroe club were: Mr Cartier and Mr Holden, followed by Mr

Atkinson and MrCapstick. On Monday, winners were Mr Higson and Mr Ormond, fol lowed by Mrs 10. Wood and Mr

Kay. I ’hursday: NS Mr and Mrs J.

raised £800 for the village hall fund through the sale of guesses about the mileage of the journey. Mr Gordon Ingham, of West Clough, and a Burnley resident guessed the cor rect figure. Driving the car, which

was loaned by Brian Doot- son’s Garage, Clitheroe, were David Sharp, Mark M a s h i 11 er an d Dave Court. Thanks to a diesel engine, they only had to refuel three times, with petrol paid for by five local haulage contractors. The journey was only

slowed by a single traffic .jam, wh'ich cropped up

just outside Birmingham shortly after their 10-15 a.m. start on Friday. Oth erwise, the trip, which ended at 8-15 p.m. on Saturday, went smoothly, with spot-on weather except for some clouds and rain m Scotland. Pictured above at John

O’ Groats are the three some, who drove round the clock apart from a five-minute stop every three hours to switch dri vers and an hour-long rust at mealtimes.
