Last ball drama at Church Meadow
Hindley St Peter’s 16S for seven, Ribblesdale Wanderers 169forseven
AS Terry Braithwaite faced the last over of this Lancashire Cup tie, every fielder bar the bowler and wicketkeeper was on the boundary edge and 12 runs were still needed. -------- -
A single was taken off
each of the first four balls, and off the penultimate delivery, Wanderers needed eight. The bowler bowled a wide and then another single was scored. With one ball remaining,
and Malcolm Dennett facing, the wicketkeeper was also despatched to the boundary. Dennett charged down tne wicket at the bowler, who again bowled a wide, but this time there was no-one to stop it and the batsmen ran two. Now, from the almost impossible task of six to win,
Dennett needed four. You could cut the tension
with a knife and the only two who did not seem to be ner vous were the batsmen. The last ball was outside
Dennett’s off-stump and he cracked it through point for
the winning runs. The crowd invaded the
pitch as the impossible had happened and Hindley were left to hold their heads in anguish as they knew they were as much to blame for losing the game. The old warrior Dennett
had seen Ribblesdale through to victory again, and into the last 16 of the competition,
with an undefeated 70. Playing without a profes
sional, and also without Mar tin Greenhalgh and David Howard, who were on duty with the league sides, Wan derers elected to field feeling that it was better to chase a total with a weakened attack. Gordon Leach opened the
on to bowl and gave a good account of himself in his first home game for the first team. Dennett and Paul Spencer were also required to bowl and did well to keep Hindley under 200 as the chase for quick runs in the last 10 overs added 60. Dennett finished with three wickets, with the pick of the bowlers Braith waite and Leach.
disastrously as Harry Kenyon was felled oy a bouncer in the first over, sustaining a cut ear, and Dave Cottam was caught behind in the second without a run on the board.
Wanderers’ innings began
and, with Sorell, took the score to 23 before being caught on the boundary. Sorell looked in fine form again, but was out to one of the worst balls of the day when he hit a full toss straight to deep square-leg.
Kenyon bravely carried on
tely involved in controversy when he was run out, but was brought back by the umpires as he had been obstructed by the bowler while attempting the run. He was not so fortu nate in the next over, being caught behind attempting to push the ball on the offside. Rain followed soon after for
for three from 17 overs. Den nett was joined by Alan Dick inson and, between several interruptions for rain, took the score to 93 before Dickin son was leg before for 27. Paul Spencer was immedia
