* Quality and design throughout

On entering via the double entrance doors one im

mediately experiences a feeling of space. This proper ly being designed around an impressive galleried hallway. In order lo create an element of grandeur within this large open space, it was decided lo make use of original hand made terracotta floor tiles. These tiles having a traditional rustic finish and considerable variety of colour. It is no coincidence that tiles like these are regularly unearthed during archaeological digs, looking better than the day they were made. Nor is it surprising that there is such a strong demand for reclaiming them for buildings all over Europe.

this unique property, giving the authentic appear ance that can only be achieved by attention to detail and adhering to traditional crafts and materials.

On entering the lounge your attention is immediately drawn to the inglenook fireplace of traditional brick and beam construction. The next eye catching feature is the walk through Victorian conservatory, again containing those wonderful terracotta tiles. This hexagonal conservatory is accessed from the lounge via a set of french doors and typical to the quality within the rest of the house it is of an unusually high standard, being double glazed, including stained glass, and allowing access to the rear garden by a further set of double opening French doors.

room. With the high standard of the rest of the property then, it seemed natural to look towards the acknowledged masters of kitchen furniture, the French, to supply us with a suitably rustic kitchen. We chose a hand distressed Provcncalc style of oak door front with the antique handles and hinges, with all the usual refinements one would expect tQfind in a french kitchen. Terracotta tiles adorn the floor and hand crafted timber beams to the ceiling complete this countiy kitchen.

Pinesquare, therefore, have opted for the use of reclaimed English Oak on their new showhome. The windows and front elevation have been handcrafted to create a realistic recreation of a close-studded Elizabethan house.

THE DIFFERENCE!

Most Building Societies have changed rather a lot over the years. Some o f the larger Societies have amalgamated to form giant financial institutions and many smaller ones have disappeared altogether having been swallowed by national concerns, completely losing their local identity.

Marsden Building Society is not, and never will be, a national organisation with hundreds o f branches all over the country. Our roots are in Lancashire and we have limited the expansion o f our Branch and Branch agency network to the North West. Wc arc also extremely proud to have remained totally independent since our foundation in I860, never having been involved in mergers or take-overs with anyone.

We like to think that we have maintained an old fashioned approach to our customers, we do our best to treat them as individuals with individual problems, and wc try to be as flexible as possible.

We hasten to add, though, that old fashioned docs not mean out o f date, for we have the very latest technology at our disposal.

Wc think however there is still room for the human touch in the modem world and wc do not sacrifice traditional values such as personal service and friendliness.

We believe the Marsden is different to most other Building Societies. Wc think it is better.

The roof lines are so unusual that we have not wit nessed their like elsewhere in the county, even the gutter brackets are handmade and ornamental. The incorporation of a brick plinth, together with the use of patterned brickwork and brick diapering compli ments the whole flavour of this characteristic home.

careful thought, as to the use of roofing materials, cost being of minimal importance. For this particular house we have chosen to use a hand made clay Peg roofing tile, with alternate bands of ornamental beaver tail tiles, all time consuming and craft intensive work. The production of Kent Peg tiles ceased ap proximately fifty years ago, however, recently, a few companies have reopened old factories to reproduce these traditional tiles. Combining craftsmanship and quality with technical expertise. Each tile is hand made by trained craftsmen, as witnessed when we visited the factory for purpose of choosing shade and col- mmm our. Drying and firing technology ensures a con stant high quality product. Traditional tech niques give the nibless tiles a random, uneven sanded surface, which, true to the medieval ver sion has veiy little camber.

launch "PeriodBuild’, a range of properties that take their design from the picturesque styles of the past. The care and attention to detail can clearly be ob served by the choice of time honoured materials, often hand made, specifically for individual houses. Indeed, these materials are rarely used today except in the restoration of listed buildings. This refreshing approach to new homes allows Pinesquare to offer "PeriodBuild" at a price that compares favourably with older houses of character.

range of properties making great use of the varied styles and materials that are associated with the tradi tional English house. Once again the use of oak, handmade bricks and clay tiles, to name but a few, are resurrected to give an authentic appearance which simply can not be achieved by modem mass-produced materials. At Pinesquare we are justly proud of the fact that "PeriodBuild" means the resurgence of an attitude to housebuilding that has been sadly missed over the past few decades.

The Chiddingstone continues our "PeriodBuild"

oured materials like thatch, english oak, hand made bricks and ornamental clay roofing tiles, etc., help us to retain the finest traditional character whilst at the same time avoiding the problems nor mally associated with an older property.

The whole basis of the "PeriodBuild"

philosophy has been brought about by our appreciation and respect for the wealth of existing vernacular architec ture that is evident throughout England. It was only after a great deal of research on both design and material availability, coupled with a rejection of the bland na ture of modern styles that enabled "Peri odBuild" to achieve the level of authenticity seldom or never seen in new homes of today.
