P u b visit ends in a s sau l t

A CHRISTMAS Eve visit to a local pub turned sour when an argument developed between a mail and an acquaintance, Clitheroe magistrates were told. David Schofield (22), of

Pendle Street East, Sab-

den, struck the other man in the face on two separate occasions at the Well- springs Hotel, Nick o’ Pendle, and an ambulance had to be called to take the man to hospital with an injured nose and eye. Schofield, who pleaded

guilty to assaulting Ian Paul Dugdale and occa sioning him actual bodily harm, was fined £200 and ordered to pay Mr Dug dale £300 compensation for the injuries, £10.50 com pensation for taxi fares to and from hospital and £25 court costs. P ro s e cu to r Mr Tim

Heap said that Mr Dug dale (24) and Schofield had known each other for some years. Mr Dugdale was approached by the defen dant and a conversation d e v e lo p e d in t o an argument. Scho field s tru ck Mr

Dugdale in the face with his fists, bursting his nose. Other customers separ ated the two and Mr Dug dale went to the toilets to

clean up. The second assault hap

pened in the toilets when Mr Dugdale was again struck in the face and

knocked to the floor. He passed out, his nose was bloody and there was a cut above an eye, which was also black and swollen. Eight “butterfly plasters” were needed to seal the cut, said Mr Heap. Mr W i ll iam B e r r y ,

representing Schofield, said that the assaults hap pened after the defendant had wished Mr Dugdale “a happy Ch ristma s” and shaken him by the hand. Mr Berry alleged that

Dugdale made some sar castic remarks to which the defendant took excep tion. Schofield had drunk a considerable amount of alcohol and so lost his self- control. The other man was similarly the worse for drink. Schofield, who other

wise had an unblemished record, now regretted the incident and was deeply ashamed of what he had done.

St Helens Ladies FC 3,' . Clitheroe Ladies FC 1

C L ITH E RO E can con sider themselves a little unlucky not to have come away from Merseyside with at least a point, fol lowing a fine performance in this North West first division match. They began in confident

style, stringing together a number of im p re ss iv e moves, but the St Helens rearguard were equal to th e ta s k . C l i th e ro e ’s defence were very com posed when ever th e ir opponents attacked, until the 20th minute when St Helens scored following a goalmouth scramble. Clitheroe continued to

push forward, but could not force an equ a liser b e fo r e h a l f - t im e . S t Helens, who seemed to show a little more deter mination in the second half, went further ahead with a well-taken goal.’ Their third came from the penalty spot when a Clith eroe player handled the ball. I t was not all over,

th ou gh , as C l i th e ro e fought their way back into the game with a goal from new recruit Louise Ward, whose 20-yard drive left the St Helens goalkeeper clutching at thin air. Particularly impressive

for Clitheroe in this much- improved display were midfield players Vicky Ashworth and Liz Ross. Clitheroe: Moore, Fer

guson, P a rk e r , Ward, Bibby, Ross, Tilley, Ash worth, Morris, Feather, O'Brien.

Witnessed Chatburn air-raid

A FO RM ER Chatburn woman who witnessed the famous air-raid on the vil lage in 1940, has died.

Mrs Evelyn B urges s

(94) lived in Beech Grove for 40 years, before mov ing to a home for the e ld e r ly in C la y to n - le-Moors.

She was one of a num

ber of people who wit nessed the incident in which a lone German Heinkel plane circled the village before returning to drop two bombs, one pf which fell on a petrol tanker.

Mrs Burgess had one of

the clearest views of the a t ta c k as th e German came in at rooftop height, apparently aiming for Chatburn mill.

He was so low that she could clearly see his face

as. he roared past. One of the bombs exploded 200 yards away, but amazingly Mrs Burgess escaped seri ous injury.

There was extensive

damage, with death and injury, but rescuers after wards commented that there could have been far more casualties.

Mrs Burgess leaves a

son and a daughter. The service and interment will be at Christ Church, Chat- bum, today.

PRETTIER PLACE

THE Ribblesdale . Pool is now a far prettier place to sw im , th a n k s to th e removal of two barriers and the in s ta l la tio n of plants and ferns in their place.

front of the cash desk and one immediately in front of the pool wall entrance have both made way for the much more attractive greenery.

there is now more room in the foyer. I t is the first step towards proposed alterations to the foyer area in future years.

Semi-final heartache

Henthorn United Under-16s 1; Boundary Park Juniors 5

HENTHORN lost this Soreen Under-16 Lanca shire Cup semi-final to a very professional, hard- t a c k l in g s id e f rom Oldham. They paid the penalty

for a lack of match practice when, despite having most of the play in the first half, they turned round at the interval 2-1 down. Without regular ’keeper

Barnes, who was injured in th e previous day’s CRGS game, Wa tkin s deputised and, apart from a lapse late in the second half, performed extremely well. Henthorn started off

well and went ahead mid way through the first half when Czapowski was pulled down by the ’keeper and Hargreaves scored from the spot. They should have gone

three up, with Ainsworth and then Sayle shooting weakly at the ’keeper. D e sp ite both wingers proving to be a handful, the Henthorn defence seemed comfortable, but two pieces of bad marking cost them dear, with Old ham s c o r in g on bo th occasions. In th e s e c o n d .h a l f ,

Henthom tired and some uncompromising tacklini by the v is i to rs , whicl earned them four book ings, slowed several key players and the Clitheroe side surrendered midfield. . Apart from the occa sional runs by Czapowski, Ainsworth and a late Sayle header superbly saved, the game was dominated by the Oldham side. The match was watched by several league, scouts,
